Today marks the first day of National Eye Health Week, a campaign designed to help your patients better look after their eyes and preserve vision. Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, and yet there are 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives. Our Medical Retina Lead, Amit Nakum, shares his expertise on the importance of regular eye health checks, educating patients that these are not only to check eye sight but overall eye health too. #NationalEyeHealthWeek #NEHW #Optometry

As well as delivering a five-star service to our patients, our teams support many local charities too. Here’s just a few recent events… - Ruth Cuthbert, from the International Aid Trust, visited our Blackpool hospital to collect boxes of pre-loved spectacles, generously donated by patients. These spectacles are now on their way to Moldova, where they will help provide the gift of sight to people living in poverty. - The Derby team is super proud of HCTs Nic and Jo for completing a 13-mile Peak District trek, raising more than £500 for Alzheimer’s UK. - Local volunteers at ‘Warming up the Homeless’ stopped by our Bexhill hospital to collect six large bags of blankets, which will be used as part of the charity’s outreach and support services for those in need across East Sussex. Great jobs all 👏

At SpaMedica, we’re committed to supporting both our patients and colleagues. Mental health and wellbeing are a priority for us, and we provide a range of resources to help our team thrive. Musician Rob Fellows recently shared how much cataract surgery improved his mental health: “Thanks to SpaMedica, I can see clearly now. Before, my eyesight was discoloured and blurred. It really got me down.” Unfortunately, many others are still facing similar struggles. That’s why we’re dedicated to reducing NHS cataract surgery waiting times and making a real difference for patients. Together, we can make a lasting impact. #MentalHealth #CataractSurgery #SpaMedica #PatientCare #Wellbeing

It was a ‘back to school’ experience for our HCTs Mia Legge and Shannon Loughran (tagged), who were reunited with their former headteacher Bill Hedges, when he visited SpaMedica Coventry for cataract surgery. Shannon said: “It was really nice catching up with Mr Hedges after all these years. It brought tears to my eyes seeing how thrilled he was with having his sight restored, and how much having our support throughout his cataract surgery meant to him.” Mia has a fond memory of the entire school singing the soundtrack to The Lion King, his favourite film, when Mr Hedges retired. She explains: “He said that we really put him at ease, and we even played The Circle of Life as he walked into theatre.” Bill gave Mia, Shannon and the rest of the Coventry hospital staff top marks after his ‘incredible’ cataract surgery.
