😍 I'm really loving running team offsites at the moment. It allows me to combine my specialisms of creative thinking and facilitation. 👀 My eyes lit up when I got the brief for the inaugural gathering of the AEG Technology Team. Rather than loading the agenda with business updates and strategy decks these 2 days needed to be all about learning, meaningful connection and collaboration. 🙏 Thanks for a fabulous 2 days. One big thing which gets in the way of Creative Thinking is ROUTINE. Now let's be clear, some routines are a good thing. They keep us efficient. We don't need to re-appraise how to put on our socks 🧦 or make a tea ☕ in the morning! BUT routine thinking 🤔 is bad. Never questioning why we do things a certain way. If we can WAKE UP to the fact we are creatures of habit it puts us in a stronger position to do something about it. The start of the year is a time of teams re-connecting in the room or on the Zoom (other video conference platforms are available but don't rhyme as well!) This often involves looking at the strategy ahead and doing a bit of 'brainstorming' together. Susan Cain who wrote the fabulous book 'Quiet' states 3 psychological problems with traditional brainstorming. 1. Social loafing - when some people dominate others sit back 2. Production blocking - a queue of people waiting to share their idea 3. Evaluation Apprehension - fear of being personally judged for your input These issues often happen when we have too many people in the room and not enough structure.
