Our Wandsworth service at St Nicholas Church, Tooting, has completed its first month of operation! We have thoroughly enjoyed working with St Nicholas Church & supporting those in the local community. A total of 32 individuals have presented at the service and received support from Spires. We’re excited to see the service develop and help more people in need across Tooting and the local area! Here's an example of the work we've done since we started our service: Jacob came to Spires' new drop-in service at St Nicholas church in Wandsworth after being homeless and rough-sleeping in a local park for a week. He is a French male who has lived in the UK for 9 years with his partner. They're now no longer together, and she has returned to France with their children. Despite recovering from drug and alcohol issues in 2020, Jacob unfortunately relapsed due to his relationship breakdown and was very upset about not being able to see his children. He is experiencing anxiety & depression as well as Fibromyalgia as a result of his situation and was very emotional when he presented to Spires. Jacob received a winter emergency support pack from Spires, which includes thermals, underwear, toiletries & a sleeping bag, as he was rough sleeping. Following an assessment with a Spires support worker, a referral was made to Street link and SPEAR, the local Outreach team. A drug and alcohol outreach worker was present at the service, who was able to promptly direct Jacob to services that can help him with his recovery. By attending our new service, Jacob was quickly connected with essential services, getting the help he needs to address his homeless and support his drug and alcohol recovery. The London Walk is happening on Friday 14th March. It's a night-time walk organised by The London Homelessness Collective, uniting charities that work to support homelessness together to walk as one. The walk is due to begin from Trafalgar Square at 8pm and there are 3 different distances to choose from; 10k, half marathon & full marathon. Before Christmas, Spires were thrilled to welcome Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix to our service and hear about his dedication to helping those experiencing homelessness. Maxence met with people who are receiving support from Spires and talked with our staff about Spires’ work. Maxence generously donated over 50 support packs to help those facing homelessness this Winter. A wonderful day for everyone involved. We had a wonderful time hosting Christmas Lunch at St Leonard's Church yesterday with The Lunch Club. Over 70 people attended, enjoying an amazing Christmas meal and receiving lots of gifts. It was a fantastic event for everyone involved. Our thanks to The Lunch Club, to all those who donated items to Spires and for all our volunteers for their time in providing numerous Christmas meals!
