Our ground-breaking Effectiveness Gap Map tool is now in its sixth year. This tool evaluates homelessness interventions from around the world to highlight where evidence does or does not exist, what works, and why. Understanding the evidence landscape is pivotal for improvement and this map serves as a beacon in that pursuit. Watch the video below for a short explainer. Better evidence for a world without homelessness. A What Works Network member.
About us
We champion the creation and use of better evidence for a world without homelessness. Homelessness is complex – yet to date relatively few interventions have been rigorously evaluated – and fewer still have shown positive results. We need to accelerate change in this sector. A way to do this is to focus on what works – by finding and funding solutions backed by evidence and data.

Spending on homelessness services, and its impact upon public finances and people’s lives, has never been more in the spotlight than it is today. Following the release of the UK National Audit Office Office (NAO) report on the effectiveness of government in tackling homelessness and our upcoming report on value for money in temporary accommodation, join our event on Thursday 19 September to discuss how we achieve value for money in homelessness. Speakers will include Dame Meg Hillier MP, Vicky Davis (NAO) and Matthew Wilkins (CHI) as well as representatives from local authorities and residents living in temporary accommodation. The event is in person or online (11.30am-1pm), you can book your free tickets via the links below. In person (Petty France, London) - https://lnkd.in/ekZX565n Online - https://lnkd.in/eKtSFMQs

Exciting news from our Evidence and Data team. This week we will be receiving the first referral of a participant for the Test and Learn Programme. Read more about it below from our Evidence and Data Director, Guillermo:
Over the last two years, the team at the Centre for Homelessness Impact has been working away on new things, reaching new organisations, and achieving new milestones at pace. This week we will hit a new milestone, and if you ask me, a much more significant one: this week we will be receiving the first referral of a participant for the Test & Learn Programme. The T&L programme, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, will fund and robustly test innovative ideas to help prevent and end homelessness and rough sleeping in England. This is very exciting not only because it means entering the new phase of a programme more than 2 years in the making, but also because it means that people experiencing homelessness will have access to support that otherwise wouldn’t be available to them. This first project, working in collaboration with Greater Change, will be offering financial support via personalised budgets, identifying participants from over 30 Local Authorities. Importantly, this will be the first time that personalised budgets are robustly evaluated in the UK (by The Policy Institute), helping us to build the evidence necessary to see this model scale up to more areas across the country. You can read more about the project and the evaluation here: https://lnkd.in/euEhxmfM This is certainly a big milestone: recruiting the first person. We know we need many more and that there will be challenges ahead, changes to consider and decisions to be made. But what keeps us focused is to think about the impact this can have on people’s lives and I can’t wait to tell you more about the next big milestone: the first findings. Until then… If you want to hear more about this, or the other 7 projects, have a look: https://lnkd.in/eK7dYijm

The Government is releasing thousands from prison early - they must think about what comes next. Professor Michael Sanders writes... https://lnkd.in/ds7imgrA "The data shows us that many of these people will be back in prison - with recidivism rates among people in prisons for short spells ofless than a year, actually higher than among those in for more serious offences. A great many will also go on to experience homelessness after their release. Spending time in prison can have devastating impacts on your life - losing your job, damaging or ending relationships, and costing you your home. These factors are all huge predictors of homelessness, as CHI’s evidence review on the relationship between prison and homelessness shows." Read more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ds7imgrA

Great feature on Staying Put and the impact on young people leaving care from the Big Issue, showing the human experience behind the data. We evaluated that Staying Put significantly lowers the risk of homelessness for care leavers. With just a 13% increase in take up in local authorities across the country over 300 young people could be prevented from experiencing homelessness per year. Our evaluation of the Staying Put scheme published today, bringing with it some very positive news to the sector. Professor Michael Sanders (KCL) found consistent and strong evidence that Staying Put significantly lowers the risk of homelessness for care leavers. We have estimated that if the number of participants in the Staying Put scheme increased by just 13% across the country, over 300 care leavers could be prevented from experiencing homelessness per year. Watch Professor Sanders speaking about the report in the video below. Read more about Staying Put here: https://lnkd.in/eKQS4Hf6 Read the report in full here: https://lnkd.in/eSRDwh-7

Ahead of more information on the new UK government’s manifesto commitment to introduce a cross-government strategy, Centre for Homelessness Impact founder and CEO Lígia Teixeira explores the significance of a comprehensive government approach. Drawing on lessons from past initiatives, and offering targeted recommendations to ensure this strategy's successful implementation, Dr Teixeira argues that turning this new government commitment into effective, sustainable progress will be challenging, but ultimately, the right step forward.
