The Government have just announced an increase in their minimum wage to £12.21 an hour for those aged 21 and over ahead of tomorrow's Autumn Statement. This is welcome news but it's important to remember this is the legal minimum employers must pay - it is separate to the real Living Wage which is a voluntary standard solely based on the cost of living - currently £12.60 across the UK, and £13.85 in London. It's 1988. I get my first cleaning job. I've decided to set up a cleaning company, later to become Spotless, and I need to learn how to clean an office, and what it feels like to be a cleaner. The pay is £1.20 per hr, which I am told by Google is £4.33 in today's money. Thank goodness for the National Living Wage, announced yesterday at £12.21 for over 21 years olds, from 1 April 2025. The National Living Wage, and its more virtuous sibling, the Real Living Wage, have transformed the cleaning industry and given cleaning operatives more pride and respectability in their role, increased productivity, and reduced staff turnover. Conscious of course that some companies can deal with it easier than others, and it's not always possible to pass on the cost to customers. Some companies will even take on less staff, or let staff go. So the sum effect is the need to adapt and evolve. And we welcome that.

Edinburgh-headquartered Spotless Commercial Cleaning has acquired English firm Fluid Hygiene (FH), a hospitality sector cleaning specialist which has been operating for over three decade.
