October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month! 💙💛 Did you know that Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder and occurs in approximately 1 out of every 700 births? Here are some key facts and recent advancements to highlight: 1. What is Down syndrome? 🧬Also called Trisomy 21, DS occurs when a third copy of the 21st chromosome develops during cell division. There are three types: • Trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) – the most common form • Robertsonian translocation – the only hereditary form • Mosaic Down syndrome – only some cells have an extra copy 2. Health and Wellbeing 🩺 While people with DS are at a higher risk for some conditions, like autoimmune disorders, congenital heart defects, Alzheimer's disease, and leukemia, they’re less likely to have others, like solid tumors, heart attacks or strokes. 3. Increased Life Expectancy 📈 Advances in healthcare and inclusion efforts have doubled life expectancy from just 25 years in 1983 to approximately 60 years today. 4. Self-Advocacy and Achievements 🌟 Through the 1980s and even into the 90s, many families in the US were encouraged to place children with DS in institutions. Up until 1984, doctors could even refuse life-saving care for patients with DS. But thanks to the tireless work of self-advocates, families, and disability rights activists, attitudes and opportunities have transformed. Today, people with DS show the world their limitless potential, thriving as athletes, entrepreneurs, fashion designers, college students, photographers, and so much more. 5. Ongoing Challenges 🌍 Despite progress, there is still work to be done globally to improve the quality of life and healthcare for people with DS. It's still standard practice to institutionalize children and adults with DS in some countries. Even in the US, it's still legal in some states for people with DS and other intellectual and physical disabilities to be denied organ transplantation. 🌎✨ Let’s raise awareness and work together toward a world that values every individual’s potential. As a member engagement co-chair of the ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research, Special Interest Group on Medication Adherence and Persistence, I had the pleasure of moderating a discussion with Bernard Vrijens and Mickaël Hiligsmann on their paper "The impacts of undetected nonadherence in phase II, III, and post-marketing clinical trials" https://lnkd.in/emEsmg4x My key takeaway: WARNING!!⚠️The current system is NOT incentivising appropriate measurement of medication adherence in trials ⚠️ Quite the opposite. The incentive is to prove that only “good adherent patients” were included 😇 Easily done through pill-count and self-report to confirm 100% of medication has been taken ✅ Thus regulators and payors do not question why our investigational drug caused low adherence 😇 Nor will they cast doubt on our ITT analysis 😇 Investigators are reimbursed for their good recruits 😇 Sponsors avoid paying for additional participants 😇 Good patients will keep accessing investigational medicines and care 😇 But it's all based on a lie 😱 😱 😱 We need to recognise the issue with nonadherence in clinical trials and drive change! Thank you to our SIG manager Sahar A. for excellent organisation 😊 #clinicaltrials #medicationadherence #medicationcompliance #change #pharma

🌸 World Menopause Day: Let's Talk About It 🌸 Menopause affects all women, yet many still face significant challenges. For some, this stage can be particularly rough, with symptoms that deeply affect their quality of life. Did you know: 💡 77% of women experience one or more “very difficult” symptoms during menopause, and 10% have even left their jobs due to these symptoms. 💊 Medication adherence during menopause is often poor due to these challenges, making it even harder for women to manage their health. Despite these struggles, too many women don’t get the help they need. But there is hope! Research shows that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can significantly improve symptoms like: 💚 Hot flushes & night sweats 💚 Sleep problems 💚 Anxiety & depression during and after menopause We need to increase access to this type of support for all women going through menopause. By addressing mental health concerns, we may also see an improvement in medication adherence and overall well-being. Let’s work together to ensure no woman goes unsupported during this crucial time. 💪 References used are in the comments below 👇 #WorldMenopauseDay #MentalHealthMatters #MenopauseSupport #WomensHealth #WorldMenopauseDay2024 #MenopauseMatters #WMD24

An interesting session presented by Bill Byrom this morning at #ISOQOL on digital health measures. > 80 digital endpoints have been identified across 76 COPD studies but evidence of patient input still lacks in the area. Sprout Health Solutions #patientcentred #HRQL

🌟 Diversity in Patient Recruitment 🌟 At Sprout Health Solutions, diversity in drug development is more than just a checkbox – it's essential to truly understand patient outcomes. This year, our team hit the road (literally!) to recruit a diverse group of rare disease patients across the U.S. 🛤️✈️🚗 We faced rainstorms, alligator roadkill, and even enjoyed some Food Network-famous strawberry pie. But most importantly, we connected with patients who generously shared their unique perspectives. 💬 Check out this insightful blog by Beverly Romero on how creativity and perseverance make diversity possible in patient recruitment. 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/epKwjiw6 #PatientEngagement #RareDiseases #ClinicalResearch #DiversityMatters #DrugDevelopment #CreativeRecruitment #PatientFocused
