🦚 The 'Rights of Nature' campaign is a hopeful movement in contrast to our inability to reach a deal on resource mobilization at #COP16 👇🏻 🦎 Here is a quick overview: 🦎 Rights of Nature (RoN) is a legal instrument that enables nature, wholly or partly, i.e. ecosystems or species, to have inherent rights. 🦎 The goal is for nature to legally have the same protection as people and corporations; that ecosystems and species have legal rights to exist, thrive and regenerate. 🦚 We’re starting to see results: 🦚 Colombia: Courts have recognized the Atrato River (see photo of table with the outlines of the Atrato river) and the Colombian Amazon River ecosystem as rights-bearing entities, deserving protection from harm. 🦚 Canada: the Magpie river was granted legal personhood by local authorities, and given nine rights, including the right to flow, the right to be safe from pollution – and the right to sue. 🦚 Ecuador: Nature is part of the constitution and the Galapagos Marine Reserve and the Maglares Cayapas Ecological reserve have been given legal status for protection. 🦎 The core of this effort is the following realization, drawn from the Indigenous declaration of Nature’s Rights: 🦎 ..all life on Earth is part of Nature and subject to the laws of Nature the health of all human beings is fully integrated with the health of the planet.. 🦎 ..people come from Nature and without Nature we cannot exist..   🦎 ..many human laws and practices have been, and continue to be, misaligned with the laws of Nature.. 🦎 ..to remedy this misalignment, human laws need to be superseded by the unchanging laws of Nature.. 🦎 ..this means that Nature has Rights, within which, humans have both human rights and responsibilities..    🦎 ..Nature’s rights and human rights can and should be mutually reinforcing. Does it resonate? 🦚 As always with this type of new concept, the devil is in the details - - or rather in the accountability. 🦚 A growing number of rivers and ecosystems now have the right to flow, but how that is enforced is still pretty unclear. 🐢 A number of Indigenous leaders and kultural translators have been participating in Climate Collective community calls to share reflections and knowledge with our community. Some conversations are captured in our report on Indigenous Shareholdership across environmental markets (authored by Lauren Serota and Nkwi Flores). We are so grateful for their generosity in sharing knowledge, time and experience with us (AJ Bird Belén Páez Joel Koupermann among others). 🐢 We finally found a way to give back supporting several Rights for Nature workshops during COP16, and participation of Savimbo and their Indigenous partners and networks in person in Cali. Once a coal drop, now a flourishing wildlife sanctuary, The Camley Street Natural Park exemplifies the transformative power of rewilding🌿. It's a fitting reminder of the positive impact we can have on our planet's health and biodiversity when nature is given a chance 🌍💚. Nattergal's commitment to restoring the ecological integrity of land throughout the UK and Europe is nothing short of inspiring 🌱. Their strategic approach to rewilding - through acquisition, stewardship, and management - breathes new life into our ecosystems 🔄. The outcomes are profound: enhanced carbon sequestration, water purification, soil health, and a natural defence against flooding and pollution 💧. Biochar: Earth's Black Gold for a Greener Future   🌎 Biochar is a powerful tool in the fight against climate change, offering a sustainable way to improve soil health and sequester carbon for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. Made from organic waste through pyrolysis, biochar retains carbon that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, enriching soils and boosting agricultural productivity.   🚜 Experts report that one gram of biochar can have a surface area of up to three thousand square yards, thanks to an abundance of tiny pores. It functions as a nutrient magnet carrying a negative electrical charge that pulls in positively charged elements such as calcium and potassium. This can reduce soil acidity caused by nitrogen fertilisers and increase yield.   ➡ However, it's crucial to source biochar responsibly. Ensure it is produced using sustainable feedstocks and look out for certifications verifying its quality and environmental impact. Worldline's insightful and forward-thinking report, "Accelerating the Decarbonisation of Payments," sheds light on the path to sustainability. 🌱💳 "Payment transactions are a particularly suitable space that can be used to inform consumers about the carbon footprint of their consumption patterns, but also to encourage them to make efforts and even reward them for it." 🌍 But it's not just about the environment - this shift can also bolster your bottom line. By embracing digital payments, businesses can enjoy reduced operational costs, enhanced efficiency, and appeal to the eco-conscious consumer, driving both growth and customer loyalty. 💚💼 ➡ What is at stake? Worldline has identified that 1g CO2e emissions for each digital and in-store payment is feasible. 🎯 ➡ Why is this a big deal? If the average emissions of in-store digital transactions managed by Worldline in Belgium were reduced from the current 2.5 grams to 1 gram, it would prevent 2,100 tonnes of CO2e per year. This is equivalent to taking more than 450 passenger cars off the road for a year! 🚗🌿 On a European wide level, it would be closer to 28,000 tonnes of CO2e saved! Then imagine what could be done by reducing the CO2e emissions of processing an online transaction which is even higher at 11.9g per transaction... 📉🌐 ➡ Why is this crucial for businesses? 🌿 Climate Action: The Defining Priority for Responsible Business   In the wake of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres' "A Moment of Truth" address on World Environment Day, we at Stabiliti are reminded of the urgency and the responsibility we share in combating the #climate crisis. This is not just a statistic; it's a clarion call for immediate action. As the Secretary General poignantly stated, "We are not only in danger. We are the danger." But, importantly, we are also the solution.   💵 For our clients, focusing on ESG priorities is no longer optional; it's imperative for survival and success. The Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is hanging by a thread, and emissions are not decreasing at the necessary rate. The cost of inaction is not just environmental but economic, with climate chaos projected to cost at least $38 trillion a year by 2050.   We align with the Secretary General's call for "maximum #ambition, maximum acceleration, maximum cooperation."
