About us

STAR-Dundee is an aerospace engineering company, which designs network and related data-handling technology for use on-board spacecraft. STAR-Dundee provides electronic test and development equipment and chip designs for spaceflight applications. Our highly experienced engineers were instrumental in the development of SpaceWire, writing the ECSS standard with inputs from international spacecraft engineers. SpaceWire is now widely used on-board spacecraft with over 100 space missions already in orbit or currently being designed using SpaceWire technology. Our engineers are currently leading the research, technical development and standardisation of the next generation of SpaceWire technology, SpaceFibre, which is a substantial leap forward, offering much higher data rates, quality of service, fault detection, isolation and recovery, deterministic data delivery, low latency time-synchronisation and event signalling, and many other features and benefits. Since 2002, STAR-Dundee has provided SpaceWire evaluation, test and development equipment to the world’s space agencies and aerospace companies. Our SpaceWire interface boards and units are used in Electronic Ground Support Equipment for integrating and testing many spacecraft. Our IP cores are integrated in spaceflight systems monitoring the Earth, exploring our Solar System, studying the universe and supporting commercial space applications. STAR-Dundee is committed to providing the best possible solution for your application. Our team of highly qualified and experienced engineers understands the challenges of designing systems for space applications. Our well proven technology has flown on many high profile space missions. Part of our commitment to our customers is the effort that we spend on the research, development and standardisation of data-handling technology. SpaceFibre is the latest manifestation of our commitment to engineering excellence and international standardisation.

Our #SpaceFibre test and development product range has recently been expanded with the introduction of the STAR-Ultra PCIe Single-Lane Router. An 8-lane Gen 3 PCI Express board with eight single-lane SpaceFibre ports, each operating at up to 6.25 Gbit/s, and a high-speed interface to the host PC, the STAR-Ultra PCIe Single-Lane Router is capable of packet transfer between the host PC and the routing switch at data rates well in excess of 10 Gbit/s in both directions simultaneously. The switch itself has an effective user data rate (bisection bandwidth) of approximately 50 Gbit/s. A new version of our other, existing STAR-Ultra product, the STAR-Ultra PCIe Interface, is also being released. The STAR-Ultra PCIe Interface is a SpaceFibre Interface device which provides two ports, with up to 4 lanes on each port. Among the many improvements, this new release features links with a configurable number of lanes, making it easy to communicate with SpaceFibre devices with single-lane or multi-lane interfaces, ensuring compatibility with various lane configurations. To coincide with these releases, a new version of the STAR-Ultra software applications has been released, supporting both the STAR-Ultra PCIe Interface and the STAR-Ultra PCIe Single-Lane Router products. A new major version of our STAR-System software suite has also been released, version 6.00, including a SpaceFibre Configuration API, support for the latest Linux kernels, and many other improvements. As a company proud of our roots in Dundee, STAR-Dundee has recently agreed to provide £10,000 a year over the next five years to support the city’s closure-threatened Mills Observatory. We hope that our contribution can help maintain the Observatory’s rich legacy, support improvements and ensure that future generations, from all backgrounds, are given the opportunity to experience the wonders of astronomy. Our CEO, Stuart Mills, met with Dundee City Council Leader, John Alexander, to discuss and outline our five-year commitment and £50,000 to support efforts to help protect and enhance the observatory. Stuart had this to say: “The Mills Observatory is an important and unique feature of our city. For almost 90 years, it has been inspiring people of all ages to take an interest in astronomy and space, including several of our employees. It’s our hope that the support we’re providing can help to ensure that the Observatory continues to inspire people for many more years, and that they consider a career in our growing space industry.” Councillor John Alexander added: “I’m so grateful to the STAR-Dundee team for their unwavering support. Since contacting a number of local businesses, I’ve been inspired by their work and their commitment. In working in partnership on the future of Mills Observatory, my hope is not only to try to secure its longer-term viability but to create new educational opportunities, to improve its current offer, to amplify the message that you can work with NASA and ESA through companies in your hometown and to inspire young people to explore STEM related jobs.” Local newspaper, The Courier, published the following article on the funding: https://lnkd.in/ggr9PhXW We would like to thank everyone who has shown their support over the past few weeks and who has taken the time to complete the Mills Observatory Consultation online survey. The closing date for submissions is the 28th of June for those who would still like to contribute: https://lnkd.in/gxm4pJda

As part of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact, STAR-Dundee recently moved to electronic delivery of the software provided with our products and we will no longer be shipping CDs with products unless specifically requested to do so. This has the added advantage of ensuring that users receive the latest software when they first begin using their new product. To receive access to the latest updates for your #SpaceWire or #SpaceFibre product, whether it’s a recent purchase or a well-used unit bought 20 years ago, please register the device’s serial number at reg.star-dundee.com. We are continually improving our products and frequently release updates to both software and firmware, adding new features not initially present, plus support for new operating system versions. As part of our commitment to providing the best possible support, these updates are made available to all registered users through the download pages. More details at https://lnkd.in/dKfCe757.
