Thankyou for the kind works Ehi Stan-Labo, it was a pleasure to have you with us as part of the 10,000 Black Interns programme. Good luck with your next chapter!
Master of Public Health | Microbiologist | Health Equity Enthusiast | Junior Public Health Researcher
About two months ago, as I walked through the bustling streets of Leeds City Centre, knowing it would be my last time there for a while, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me to that moment. My 10,000 Black Interns placement with Starfish Search had just come to an end, and I felt an immense sense of pride in the work I had done during my time there. There was a quiet sense of satisfaction in knowing the impact I had made in a couple months. What started as an Administrative/HR Assistant role quickly became an opportunity to apply the research skills I gained while studying for my Master’s in Public Health. The experience was everything I hoped for and more. Looking back, I am proud to celebrate my achievements. Although my role was administrative, I had the privilege of being involved in significant projects, one being research on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). This project helped inform decisions on the formulation of employee network groups and brought my understanding of EDI to the forefront. It was a chance to see how these concepts could be applied not only in corporate settings but also how valuable they are in public health research, where inclusivity and representation are equally crucial. In addition to this, I supported core administrative tasks, ensuring seamless operations in the office. This internship allowed me to draw from my academic background and apply it to real-world challenges, blending administration with in-depth research. Every project, every task, was an opportunity to showcase the versatility of my skill set. Throughout the internship, I wore my Landmark University Pathfinder lapel pin, and on the final day, it meant even more to me. That pin wasn’t just an accessory—it represented a deep commitment to finding my path, a reminder of the fire burning inside me. As I approached the end of the placement, the pin symbolised the zeal that has always driven me. I realised that the path I’m meant to follow is one where my passion, dedication, and skills will guide me, wherever that may lead. It was a personal symbol of everything I had worked toward and the path I’m still forging. I have learned so much and now, I’m eager to carry those learnings forward. The future holds big dreams, and while the path might be uncertain, I know that I’m ready to tackle it with the knowledge and fervour I’ve built. A special mention to Harpreet O’Brien, a manager anyone would be lucky to have, to Nnenna Ugwuodo, my brilliant colleague and co-intern, and to the Starfish family, who made coming into the office such a joy. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside all of you during that chapter of my journey. As I reflect on this experience, I’m filled with gratitude for the chance to put my research skills to use and contribute meaningfully. That may have been the end of one chapter, but I know it’s just the beginning of what’s to come. Onwards and upwards! #10KBI
