Do these statistics and comments reported recently in The Guardian ring true of your school's struggles too? 📈 Nearly 9 out of 10 report a marked rise in pupils missing school due to #mentalhealth issues since Covid pandemic. Would you want to notice and support these students earlier, before their risks escalate? (See STEER Tracking down below) 👩🎓 Children in years 9 and 10 faced the biggest challenges, “as they are the cohort of young people that was most disrupted by Covid” Would it help to support the whole cohort, using a personalised Action Plan? (See STEER Impact) 💭 “Schools recognise that there will be genuine cases of pupils with anxiety, but they are not qualified to tell if it’s genuine” - DfE report Would it help to be able to detect a pupil's risk of anxiety before it takes hold, or to deliver low-level strategies that prevent its escalation? (See STEER Tracking) 🏡 “Following Covid, the strong partnership between home and school has deteriorated significantly." Would it support your school's relationship with home to discover the safeguarding risks of students at school as compared to home? And learn the personalised strategies you can share with their families at home? (see STEER Impact) 📊 Last year, the Department for Education classed 150,000 children at state schools in England as severely absent – missing more than half their sessions. This is 150% higher than pre-#pandemic. Here is how STEER's toolkit will help you reduce #schoolabsence: 💡 STEER Tracking is a whole school tool that flags your students' (hidden or emerging) social-emotional risks, by measuring their self-regulation, proven to underpin mental wellbeing. It guides you through creating Action Plans of simple but targeted and personalised strategies that reduce 8/10 of your students' SEMH risks in 6 months. https://lnkd.in/g6cC2qKW 💡 STEER Safeguarding A unique assessment picks up the effects of hidden safeguarding risks on the thinking of a young person, for example bullying, grooming, abuse, or family or school pressures. The assessment is able to determine whether the hidden safeguarding risks lie in school, outside school, or both. 100% of STEER schools say it has enabled them to identify vulnerable students earlier. https://lnkd.in/evwBPPfS 💡 STEER Impact provides you real-time charts that show you what impact your school culture has on each specific cohort and how your data compares to other similar schools. Write cohort Action Plans of effective strategies to support your most vulnerable groups, such as Year 9 and 10 at the moment. And evidence the impact, of course. https://lnkd.in/eWWvekk6 Reach out to us here 👉 https://lnkd.in/evFUspJ8 https://lnkd.in/d6kSdr8i

STEER Tracking is not just a whistleblower for the hidden struggling students in your school but a radar for how young people across the world are managing. STEER’s radar has been tracking how adolescent boys are coping post-pandemic and it has picked up a new risk. The day after #worldmentalhealthday, psychologist and founder Dr Simon Walker explains what “over-regulation”, signs of which you might already be seeing, means for your male students. #mentalhealth #worldmentalhealthday #postpandemic #boys
Co-Founder STEER | Find and reduce the hidden mental health and safeguarding risks that surveys miss | STEER's innovative toolkit prioritises which students need support both in and out of school
Are girls still more vulnerable than boys? Multiple reports have confirmed that Covid lockdowns had a greater negative impact on girls’ mental health than boys’. However, the data now seems to be shifting. The post-Covid world seems to be creating more problems for boys and this is a concern. STEER Education first reported the negative impact on girls’ mental health caused by lockdown earlier than any other body in the UK. By December 2021 we had been able to show, through our multi-year tracking data, that lockdown was having two specific effects on girls’ social-emotional health. One was to make girls more risk averse. The second was to make them more internalised. STEER Co-Founder and adolescent expert Dr Jo Walker named the combined behaviour as ‘internalised control’. At the time, adolescent boys did not exhibit this same sustained rise in internalised control. Four years on from the start of the pandemic, STEER is now picking up that boys are struggling. It's with a bias relatively new to them: over-regulation. In this thought piece, I explain over-regulation and its risks, the drivers of the rise, and the consequences for your male students you may starting to notice, or already seeing. I also orientate you to a response that your school could follow. Today, 10th October 2024 is World Mental Health Day. It was first celebrated in 1992. STEER Education was set up in 2012 with a mission to relieve the young people mental health crisis, by teaching them to steer the road of adolescence. We first started providing schools with peer reviewed mental health tools to improve young people's mental health in 2015 and supported students' wellbeing in more than 15 countries over the pandemic in 2020-22. Today, this makes STEER the longest running tracker of student wellbeing. More than 10,000 teachers have completed our online training programme and, currently, we safeguard the mental health of more than 70,000 students. Things have come a long way since 1992. Thank you to every teacher who has made it their duty to support their students' mental health. To every school who has prioritised their young people's wellbeing. To every parent who pays attention to their children's mental health. To everyone who remembers to look after their own. Let's celebrate our progress in recognising mental health. #worldmentalhealthday2024

For some time I've been saying that #AI and #chatbots will likely play an increasing role in a personalised #SEMH #curriculum. Here's a glimpse into what may look like. For many- this will look like a solution that places students at the centre of the solution, with autonomy over their own #data and outcomes; relieving #teachers of the burden of SEMH support for which they feel ill-equipped- giving them more time to 'teach', and solving the scale and cost issues that prevent CYP getting the support they need early enough... But at what cost to human to human relationship? Let's pool some questions of our own in the comments... What lights up in your head? Concerns or wonderings ... I'll start.

When a young person stops attending school, we know something is not right- but there is no "one size fits all'' when it comes to helping them re engage. We began STEER Education to track each pupil's individual developmental journey from 8-18, so that when they reach an impasse, we can offer proactive, personalised support to help them navigate through. Returning to school after lockdown was an impasse many pupils and families have struggled with, but fining is not the answer. A proactive, personalised approach is not going to solve it overnight, but it will help us understand where each pupil is right now, and what their next small step may be. #schoolabsence #studentmentalhealth https://lnkd.in/e6dZ9PEE

STEER’s Daily Signpost for your #endofyear #transition 🏫 🎒 (= simple, personalised strategies for #teachers to help their students settle in) Recognise this student in your own class? “I’m feeling a bit worried but I’m not telling anyone. They may think I’m being silly, making a fuss, or weak. If people ask, I‘ll say I’m fine, but inside I may not be. I might worry through the summer and struggle to settle back in #September. Little things, done now, will help me” 💭 At STEER Education, we say this student has a low Self-Disclosure. Self Disclosure measures how visible students make their thoughts, ideas, opinions and feelings to others... There are a few risks 🚨 for students with an overly low Self Disclosure, but we can support these #proactively, especially around times of change and challenge, such as starting a new year. 👉 What are these ways you can proactively support them? Well, here are a few deliverable actions that you can try now: If you're using STEER Tracking in your school, you'll be able to see which of your students are low self-disclosing and need this #personalised support... 💡 Make opportunities for your low self-disclosing students to visit their new teacher by sending messages or making deliveries. ✉ Ask that teacher to come up with a conversation starter- let them know a fun fact you've learned about your student over the year ⚽ 🕺 Without STEER Tracking, you can deliver these preventatively for the low SD students you don't yet know... 💡 Tell your students what you remember about starting #secondaryschool or moving up #yeargroup! Did anything help you? 🤔 💡 Put a moving-up question box in class, with all questions posted anonymously. Respond to questions through your transition preparation. 🗳 STEER has developed over 3,000 strategies to signpost students towards healthy #selfregulation. STEER Tracking will tell you which of your students need which kind of support, and then guide you through delivering that, having a positive impact on the #mentalhealth, #SEMH and #learning of 8/10. STEER’s Daily Signpost for your Year 6-7 transitions this week (giving you some simple, personalised strategies to help with #settlingin) Over the #transitionweek, you might notice a student like this: “I’m feeling a bit worried but I’m not telling anyone. Encourage them to learn their names and say hello as they pass them around school. 📋 👋 Without STEER Tracking, you can deliver these preventatively for the low SD students you don't yet know... 💡 Ask teachers to fill in a fun questionnaire so that their new students can get to know them- favourite band, football team, food... 👩🏫 🍲 💡 Ask your students what thoughts and feelings we might have at transition time. EXAM SIGNPOST 📚 (=personalised mental health strategies for teachers to deliver to their students, based on their risks) First, let's find out which of your #students you can support today... "I often trust myself - what I think, say or do; what I look like; what my abilities are. I assume that other people will notice or value me - and don't expect to be overlooked or dismissed. I don't really notice what's happening around me though and can be a bit insensitive or indifferent at times. I'm not often affected by what other people think, say, or do and tend to dismiss or shrug off feedback. If I was struggling, I'd assume I had the skills, qualities and resources to overcome these challenges."💭 This student has, what we call at STEER Education, a high Trust of Self. We can be wary of this #mentalhealth risk for our high Trust of Self students... 🚨They may develop a conditional or inflated sense of self, dependent on success and status. When it comes to #exams, this puts a lot of #pressure on their performance and eventually on #ResultsDay. But as their teacher, you can try these two strategies to proactively target this risk, by helping them to build #resilience, through struggle 💪 💡 Introduce them to the Resilience Gym. “Developing resilience is like going to the gym. When we do things that are hard, we are lifting a heavy weight. We struggle and want to give up. But our resilience muscles are getting stronger. If we only do things that are easy, we won't build our resilience muscles. So next time you are struggling, remember you are training your resilience muscles!" Just like #revision builds knowledge and trains skills! 🏋♀️ And to preventatively support those younger students for future them, coping with exams? Try this one! 💡 Help them identify a situation where they feel defeated, and struggles to Bounce Back. Perhaps when their team is losing? When receiving feedback? When getting an answer wrong? Explain to them that these are Bounce Back opportunities! "Imagine yourself as a bouncy ball. When things go wrong, you can feel like your ball has been squashed. But give yourself a couple of minutes to breathe deeply, and you will see your ball spring back to life!" 🏀 These are 3 of 3,000 strategies STEER has developed for #teachers. Across the country they use them to give #targeted #personalised support to their students according to their needs as they emerge through the STEER assessment. 🙌 100% of schools say it has helped them identify their (often hidden) #vulnerable students earlier. 🤝 STEER can support your school too. Lunchtime signpost 🍏 This is a STEER Daily Signpost for #exampressure, as many go through it right now. First, let's find out which #students you teach we're supporting today... "I like things to stay the same. I like to know what's going to happen and when. I prefer doing what I'm already good at, because getting things right and doing things well is important to me. I'm happy with the same familiar friends, rather than making new ones. You see I don't like surprises or risks! I like to feel in control. If I was struggling, I'd find ways to feel more in control again which may lead to some unhealthy coping strategies which may be hidden." 💭 This student has, what we call at STEER Education, a low Seeking Change. This video will tell you more. https://lnkd.in/e7EmGmWh We can be wary of a #mentalhealth risk for our low seeking change students... 🚨 "Under pressure, I might seek control through things like restricted eating, self-harm, compulsions, rumination, refusal, avoidance" You might be wondering how you can help #proactively... 👉 So I've picked out these three targeted #strategies for you to try: 💡 When they feel out of control, they may look for things they can control. This might be controlling things such as eating, clothing, routines or friendships. Build a list of strategies that give them healthy control. E.g. sorting out a school cupboard; following a routine; building a tower out of lego, kicking a ball against a wall; shooting basketball hoops, categorising objects into groups. ⚽ 💡 When they manage their fears through avoidance or refusal, avoid cajoling, bribing or giving an ultimatum. Instead, validate their feelings, and then offer your support. “I wonder if you might be feeling a bit nervous about doing this. It's okay to feel like this. What can I do to help you have a go?” 💬 💡 When they start to ruminate on a worry or fear, first acknowledge and validate the feeling, and then suggest healthy distraction activities. E.g. counting backwards; delivering a message around school; noticing what is happening out of the window; colouring in. Some students find a safe, sudden jolt can take their minds off their worries. Hold an ice cube? Put elbows in cold water? Twang an elastic band on the wrist. It's a bit like a brain reboot when it has got stuck. ✏ These are 3 of 3,000 strategies STEER Education has developed for #teachers. Across the country they use them to give #targeted, #personalised support to their students according to their needs as they emerge through the STEER assessment. 100% of schools say it has helped them identify #vulnerable students earlier. STEER can support your school too. Find out more https://lnkd.in/eMK7bf-Y Check in here tomorrow for another two strategies that could help another of your students' to manage exam pressure. 👩🏫
