We were very privileged to be part of this year’s Up Helly Aa - Shetland’s annual festival marking the end of the Yule season and a showcase of the islands’ Norse culture. For the first time, Harris Tweed® played a starring role in the Jarl Squad’s capes. Each outfit was a work of art - the rich, intricate craftsmanship of Harris Tweed®, leatherwork, metalwork, and expert sewing skills shining through in each unique piece. Stornoway Port Authority’s CEO Alex Macleod was invited to participate in celebrating this remarkable tradition, by Guiser Jarl Calum Grains, CEO of Lerwick Port Authority alongside Tom Hutchison from Montrose Port Authority (pictured L-R – Alex Macleod, Calum Grains, Tom Hutchison). Alex Macleod remarked, ‘It’s an honour to be invited to be a member of this year's Jarl Squad. Up Helly Aa is a truly special celebration of Shetland’s heritage.’ We couldn’t be prouder to have contributed to this spectacular event, and we look forward to many more moments of collaboration and tradition in the future.

Lerwick’s famous Up Helly Aa festival has extra maritime links in its ranks this year with representatives of three ports participating in the activities today (Tuesday 28 January 2025) 🌊 Guizer Jarl heading up the event, Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, Captain Calum Grains, invited Tom Hutchison and Alex MacLeod, his opposite numbers at Montrose Port Authority and Stornoway Port Authority respectively, to join his Jarl Squad 🛡 Calum Grains said: “It is my pleasure to welcome Tom and Alex to the day’s community activities, including the evening torchlight procession, the traditional burning of the Viking galley and the follow-on celebrations. Stornoway: Cruise Growth Through Community Collaboration 🚢   Stornoway Port Authority (SPA) is setting an example by actively engaging the local community to ensure cruise tourism benefits everyone. We're hiring! 🌟 An opportunity has arisen in the Stornoway Port Authority for a Marine Pilot/Assistant Harbourmaster. Applications are invited from individuals with the relevant qualifications and experience for this position.   The Port Authority is going through a period of change, where a number of major expansion opportunities have being progressed. We are looking for a motivated and committed individual who will thrive on the challenge of developing with the Port.   The applicant must possess a minimum of a Chief Mate II/2 unlimited Certificate of Competency and have worked as Chief Mate for a minimum of three years. A Masters unlimited II/2 Certificate of Competency is desirable as is either command or pilotage experience.   Traffic within the harbour is varied, from towage and coastal vessels to some of the largest cruise vessels afloat. The role will involve supporting the harbour master in facilitating the safe and efficient handling of shipping and the safe and efficient conduct of navigation of vessels subject to pilotage.   Hours: Full time – 37 hours per week Mon-Fri, with flexibility required due to tides, weather and vessel movements therefore, night and weekend work will be required at times.   A very competitive salary with an excellent benefits package (including a defined benefit pension, company vehicle, etc) will be offered.
