As #EnglishTourismWeek25 draws to a close, we look to the future. We’ve been working in partnership with stakeholders across the city and will soon be launching our tourism strategy. A strategy that plays to our coastal city’s many strengths, creates the best possible visitor experience and keeps our visitor numbers growing every year.

Staff from VolkerStevin, the contractor tasked with constructing the new Wear Footbridge, hosted students from the Beacon of Light School on Tuesday 18 March 2025 to coincide with the national Open Doors: Get into Construction campaign, delivered by Build UK. Taking place on construction sites and in offices spanning the length and breadth of the UK, the annual campaign takes visitors behind the scenes to showcase the fantastic range of careers available in the construction industry. Spanning 250-metres, the new Wear Footbridge connects the former Vaux Brewery site and the Sheepfolds area of the city and is seen by city chiefs as the centre piece of the ongoing Riverside Sunderland development. Figures produced by VolkerStevin found that the Footbridge project has already delivered £3.1million in community impact, with the ongoing schools engagement programme, the latest initiative helping to deliver a lasting legacy for the city. I promised safer public transport and we are getting started. Tyne & Wear Metro will new get new ticket barriers at more stations. Regent Centre will be first with more to come very soon. It’s all part of our £208m investment in buses, cycleways, Metro, roads and the Ferry 🎉 This is just the start of our ambitious plans for the safer, greener, more reliable transport our North East deserves. I know transport is about so much more than getting from A to B. It’s the infrastructure of opportunity and is fundamental to unlocking growth in the North East.
