UK charity creating ocean activists everywhere. Thriving ocean, thriving people.

About us

Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect the ocean and our blue spaces. Home to the Million Mile Clean, Plastic Free Communities, Plastic Free Schools and the Safer Seas & Rivers Service. Our Campaigns Water Quality - Sewage and agricultural pollution still plague the rivers and ocean. We are calling for an end to sewage pollution to guarantee safe seas, all year round. Our ambition is to end sewage discharges into UK bathing waters by 2030. Ocean & Climate - To reverse the ocean and climate crisis, we need urgent and drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as well as the rapid embracing of nature-based solutions to limit carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Our ambition is for the UK to be net-zero by 2030. Ocean Recovery - The UK’s seas host some of the most biodiverse life in the world. However, due to the increasing pressure from human activities, marine biodiversity has decreased dramatically. Our ambition is for 30% of the ocean and all UK Marine Protected Areas to be highly protected by 2030. Plastic Pollution - To solve the plastic pollution crisis, we need to reduce the production and consumption of non-essential single-use, throwaway and polluting plastic, and build a circular economy that ensures plastics are designed to be reused and repaired. Our ambition is to end single-use plastic pollution on UK beaches by 2030.

🚨 We have a new opportunity for change. Since we called for a public inquiry, an even better opportunity to reform the water system has come up. The new government have promised to introduce new water quality legislation, the Water (Special Measures) Bill, aimed at cleaning up our rivers, lakes and seas. This provides a great opportunity for us to put into law many of the things we have been campaigning for, like ending #pollutionforprofit. It also gives us an opportunity to put in place measures that will set us on the route to deliver transformational reform of the water system. We must keep up the pressure on the government and ministers to take real action to deliver long-term change. So we need Ocean Activists like you to get in touch with their MPs and ask them to support the measures in this new bill that will transform the sector, not just tinker around the edges. Invigorating news for anyone who cares about clean water: Dip A Day 2024 is on the horizon! 🏊🏽🛁🥶💪 Last year, our hardy dippers braved cold water every day for a month and raised £202,105 to help fund our ocean-saving work. Do you – and maybe your team mates – have it in you too? Challenge yourself to dip everyday in October, in any cold water that’s safe and accessible to you. Whether it’s a local cove, loch, cold shower or even a garden tub (it’s been done before!) you’ll be part of a growing community that’s found a joyful way to make a difference. Plus you’ll get a daily endorphin hit too. Through the money their month of shivers made, 2023’s Dip-a-Dayers helped fund our vital campaigning to keep sewage pollution at the top of the political agenda for the general election so that – along with plastic pollution – it landed as a top priority for the new Environment Secretary. And we’re far from finished. With a new government elected we have a unique window to demand meaningful change – from our calls for a public enquiry into the water sector, to achieving more Designated Bathing Spaces that put legal obligations on water quality monitoring in the UK. But we need more funds to do it. Don’t miss out on the last big action this year! Come together as Ocean Activists, keep up the pressure and show you care about the ocean and all it makes possible. Join us for Dip A Day in October 2024. Registration opens on 27 August. One dip every day in any form of cold water. For all of October. To raise ocean-saving funds. Let’s do this! Find out more and save the date - https://lnkd.in/eECdAQUp #dipaday #dipadayinoctober #fundraising

🚨Ofwat hand out 168m in fines to three water companies.🚨 Thames Water fined £104m, Yorkshire Water fined £47m and Northumbrian Water fined £17m 📢Yorkshire Water - 45% of its storm overflows associated with its wastewater treatment works were found to be in breach of regulations.📢 📢Thames Water - 67% of its wastewater treatment works with FFT permits found to have capacity and operational issues.📢 📢Northumbrian Water - 9% of its storm overflows associated with its wastewater treatment works were found to be in breach of regulations.📢 Ofwat have stated that the three companies will be unable to recoup the costs through bill rises. Are we finally seeing Ofwat enforcing regulations with meaningful fines? "These fines illustrate the sheer state of disrepair of our broken water industry. Two thirds of Thames' wastewater treatment works have capacity and operation issues and nearly half of Yorkshire Waters storm overflows have been in breach of their permits. This is a system on its knees and the government must recognise this fact and use their upcoming Water Bill to deliver root and branch reform. It's time those in power prioritised public health, the environment, value for customer money and crack down on the profiteering polluters - let's hope today is the start of that long-awaited turnaround. “Whilst these findings are bleak this is a win for campaigners who have been demanding those in power enforce the letter of the law - a simple task that has been beyond them in recent years. We will be making sure Ofwat keep their pledge that companies will not be able to recover the money for any penalties from customers and that customers will not be charged twice where additional maintenance is required. “People demand healthy rivers, lakes and seas and the government must ensure they, and the water sector, deliver it." - Giles Bristow, CEO Surfers Against Sewage https://lnkd.in/ePjk-sct #endsewagepollution #sickofsewage #sewage #saveourseas #saveourrivers #oceanactivists #riverpollution
