We have exciting new mission news! Jovian-1 will be the first satellite of JUPITER – the Joint Universities Programme for In-Orbit Training, Education and Research. The University of Surrey is coordinating, designing and delivering the mission, working closely with teams from the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton, two of its Space South Central partners. More than 20 students from the three universities will have the unique opportunity to help design and launch the satellite. One of the five payloads on Jovian-1 will be entirely designed, built, tested and delivered by students. Their payload, DAVE, will take images and videos of the Earth and attempt to use a space-facing camera to look for space debris. A key aim of the mission will be to equip its student participants with invaluable hands-on space experience and some of the skills for which the space sector is crying out. Professor Adam Amara, Director of Space Strategy at the University of Surrey, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for students and academics from three universities to work together on an ambitious project. “The JUPITER programme is a phenomenal way to further build the space skills in the UK’s South Central region and get people excited about space, the careers it offers, and the way it inspires people of all ages.” Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e8ckrvJR The photo shows some of the Surrey students involved in our Ground Station, which will play a crucial role when Jovian-1 launches. We always love ❤️ an opportunity to experience the diverse, fascinating, and expert work that takes place behind the doors of the pioneering companies here at Surrey Research Park. So, when Campden BRI Wine Services invited us to the open day of their new specialist wine analysis laboratory, we leapt at the chance! Campden BRI is the UK’s leading independent food industry membership organisation, helping food and drink businesses succeed through science, technology, and information services. During the open event, we discovered how the organisation had partnered with the prestigious The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) to establish this state-of-the-art facility at the Park. With the UK wine industry booming, the new laboratory in our vibrant innovative community is strategically located to offer cutting-edge analysis services to leading UK wineries in Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and beyond. A particular highlight was the opportunity to try our hand—or rather our noses 👃 — at a wine fault sniffing challenge to detect common contaminants found in wine. This experience was a fantastic way to showcase some of the expertise that Campden BRI offers its members. We were also delighted to be accompanied on our visit by the University of Surrey's Dr Jonathan Brown, Senior Teaching Fellow in Nutrition and Food Science, and we look forward to fostering collaboration between Campden BRI and our colleagues and students at the university. A huge CHEERS 🥂 to the team at Campden BRI Wine Services for the invite! We look forward to supporting your success at the Park. **** Whether your company is looking for its first base or a strategic location to establish a specialist team — like Campden BRI — Surrey Research Park offers a range of versatile spaces to meet diverse business needs. It’s truly inspiring to see the advancements in mRNA cancer vaccines, especially with the recent milestone of a 67-year-old man becoming the first in the UK to receive this revolutionary treatment for lung cancer. This breakthrough aligns perfectly with Surrey Research Park’s commitment to health and its focused sub-tenet of cancer research. Datar Cancer Genetics UK, an esteemed resident of the park, exemplifies this dedication by contributing to cutting-edge cancer research and treatment innovations. As we look forward to the upcoming Cancer Bursters campaign, we are excited to see the collaboration between park-based cancer treatment and research companies. This campaign aims to spotlight the groundbreaking work being done right here at Surrey Research Park, fostering a collaborative environment that accelerates the development of life-saving treatments. #SurreyResearchPark #Research #Innovation #CancerResearch

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding mRNA cancer vaccines after the announcement of the NHS and UK plan to accelerate research into mRNA cancer vaccines, with German pharmaceutical company BioNTech. Last week marks a milestone as “a 67-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to try what doctors hope will be a revolutionary new treatment for lung cancer”. mRNA vaccines used here come from the same technology developed to bring COVID-19 vaccines to the world. They work by replicating patient-specific neoantigens found on the surface of a patient's cancer cells. When patients are given the vaccine, the mRNAs are mopped up by dendritic cells which then produce the neoantigens that educate their immune system by activating T-cells. Now when T-cells encounter the cancer cells presenting with the same neo-antigens, they can initiate cell death. This hopes to reduce cancer recurrence, a worry for all those who go into remission. With this promising development, mRNA vaccines hold the potential to be a game-changer in cancer treatment beyond lung cancer. Interested in learning more?
