Great to be at the #OrganicTradeConference last week. Shout out to Hannah Gibbs who took part, and Kiloran O'leary, representing the Bridging the Gap project, which seeks to demonstrate ways to enable people on a low income to access climate and nature friendly food. ❗ Food that is good for people and the planet is currently more expensive than food that is bad for health and produced in ways that damage the planet. ❗ The Bridging the Gap project focuses on the supply and affordability of organic fruit and vegetables to people who experience low income in cities. BIG DAY! I popped down to London today, to be part of the Soil Association trade conference - where i was asked to jump onto a panel to share what we've been up to at Mossgiel. The conference was a follow up to the association's "Organic for all" vision - a journey to understand how organic farming can be part of a wider, fair and sustainable future for our food system. Today, Organic food make up just 2.2% of UK food sales - trailing massively behind countries like Denmark (15%), Austria (12%) and Switzerland (11%) Organics is the only fully certified and recognised food production standard that is internationally known and legislated for - with actual science backing up increases in biodiversity and soil health. We know that's all important stuff, so why are the UK lagging so much? Personally, I believe that the UK - and in more particular Scotland has REALLY let itself down in investment in food processing which in turn, has hurt our opportunities to make organics (and even local) food accessible. Abbatoirs for example are widely known to have suffered from a lack of focus and now cannot meet demand where it's needed; and what our dairy industry did to creameries & small scale dairies that could today be 'churning' out world leading products is well documented in my own social media posts over the years. It's not all bad news though - Organic food sales are now outpacing growth of non-organics, and have been all year thanks to an incredible movement from stakeholders from Lands end to John O Groats. Major players are starting to recognise the benefits for people, planet & health that organics brings, and all of that wrapped up in a Mossgiel sized bun is the very reason my team and I have never given up on our vision to build a creamery right here on Mossgiel - because the power of organics isn't just about a fancy label for someone with plenty of disposable income; it's about a movement that rejects a broken food system, and invests in a future for us all...

Elements of the planning application for one of the UK’s largest industrial livestock facilities "unlawful" according to WWF-UK Great work from our climate campaign manager Ruth Westcott who has also been working on this 👇
https://lnkd.in/eJkTcfN2 The corporation behind this application - Cranswick - have been found to be hiding the truth about the impacts of factory farming. They are thwarting the informed, inclusive and democratic process that the public are entitled to. Well done WWF. WWF-UK Sarah Finch Feedback
