The Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) is a unique coalition – the only global, independent roundtable to include all stakeholders in the wine sector.
Working together, we will define sustainable wine in practical detail and develop a global wine sustainability standard.
SWR welcomes your participation for collaborative action. Whether you are a producer, distributor, retailer, a logistics partner or an academic, take your place at the table.
Would you buy wine in an aluminum bottle? 🍷
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jody Bogle from Bogle Family Wine Collection. Their new wine label, Element[AL] launched earlier this year in a first-of-its-kind aluminium wine bottle. Not a can, but a full-size wine bottle.
Jody shares why they chose aluminum, what the process from inception to bottling looked like, and insights on consumer perceptions and marketing. Listen via the link below!
We are delighted to welcome two new members to SWR:
🍷 Accolade Wines - A leading international producer and distributor renowned for their exceptional quality and global reach.
Accolade WinesEmma Gibson
🍇 Carriere Pradal - A cherished family-run vineyard from the South of France, dedicated to regenerative practices and sustainable winemaking.
Baptiste Carriere-Pradal

We are thrilled to be featured in this month's article in The Buyer.
"Conversations have gotten more interesting too. From sustainability discussions in the Sustainable Wine Round Table, particularly their debates on viticulture and the Global Reference Framework for defining sustainability, to the empowered women in wine movement..." Ben Franks
“We are currently living in a golden age of innovation in wine.”
I have just had my first piece for The Buyer published today! In the article, I discuss the huge potential across the wine and drinks industry for innovation, debate and decision-making.
I am always inspired by businesses like North South Wines Ltd | B Corp™, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, Graft Wine Company, Wanderlust Wine, Bowimi and Bottle Studio, as well as leaders in our industry like Queena Wong and the team behind Sustainable Wine Roundtable who bring the important topics to the forefront of our industry, and by the work our fantastic team do at Canned Wine Co. every day. There is so much we can achieve together.
This article follows on from a similar topic I wrote about positive storytelling in Harpers Wine & Spirit Magazine and I believe that waving a flag for optimism, innovation and investment in wine - to build on our successes with kindness and positivity - will unlock a return to growth and a love for wine that all us in the trade have experienced ourselves.

Last autumn the Sustainable Wine Roundtable developed the Bottle Weight Accord (BWA) in which signatories around the world committed to reduce their average still wine bottle weight to below 420g by the end of 2026.
At the time of launch, the BWA had 13 participants, primarily consisting of retailers. Now, around nine months later, the number of participants has grown to 19, with numerous producers in the mix.
In this short podcast Tobias Webb, founder and executive director of the SWR, and director of research and standards Dr Peter Stanbury provide a brief update on the Accord and the progress made so far. They reflect on the easy wins, the biggest challenges, the plans for sparkling wine, and more.

The Sustainable Wine Roundtable is excited to announce the launch of the SWR Sustainable Viticulture Protocol, a landmark initiative defining and supporting best practices in sustainable viticulture worldwide.
Join us for the official online launch webinar on Tuesday, July 9th at 16:00 BST where we will present the details of the protocol and unveil findings from the initial phase of work. Register for free by following the link below.
Environmental practices in the vineyard, particularly the use of chemicals like herbicides, fungicides, and fertilisers, are critical issues in wine sustainability. While organic and biodynamic methods have gained popularity for their reduced chemical use, they are not the only paths to achieving sustainability. Our new protocol seeks to reorient viticulture practices, emphasising the reduction of chemical inputs and the adoption of regenerative techniques.
The Sustainable Viticulture Protocol offers a global framework that adapts to various geographical and climatic conditions. Building on the success of the Bottle Weight Accord, which has driven significant industry-wide action towards reducing bottle weight, the protocol aims to create a comprehensive, shared approach to sustainable vineyard management.
The development of the Protocol stems from a year's dedicated work focused on addressing the sustainable use of vineyard chemicals supported by SWR members Treasury Wine Estates (USA), Ste. Michelle Wine Estates (USA), VSPT Wine Group (Chile), Cloudy Bay Vineyards (New Zealand), and Hochschule Geisenheim University (Germany).
If you have any questions regarding the Protocol, please contact Dr Peter Stanbury (Research Director) or Delaney Sheridan (Operations Manager).

🔹 Sustainable Viticulture: Launching 9th July, our research on sustainable viticulture and the Sustainable Viticulture Protocol will guide growers towards more sustainable practices, reducing the need for chemical inputs.
🔹 Annual Benchmarking of Wine Sustainability Standards: Our Global Reference Framework helps identify credible sustainability standards and avoid greenwashing.
🔹 Labour Rights: We're developing tools to support growers in managing labour rights, particularly for seasonal workers, facilitating collaboration between growers and retailers.
🔹 Retailer Group: Our Wine Retailer Sustainability Group is driving efficiencies in packaging data requirements and supporting our labour rights work.
🔹 Packaging Innovations: We're developing tools like the Bottle Miles Calculator and Alternative Formats Choice Matrix to address sustainability in wine packaging.
