It’s reassuring to see that new legislation to better protect retail workers are included in the Crime and Policing Bill. The statistics are shocking - 737,000 incidents of violence and abuse were reported in 2023-24 (British Retail Consortium), a staggering 55% increase since 2021-22. According to the Government, the new measures may include banning offenders from affected shops and ensuring that retail assaults are recorded separately from other crimes, helping police grasp the full scale of the issue. Strengthening legal protections is a crucial step towards addressing this growing crisis. No one should have endure violence and harassment in their workplace. https://lnkd.in/d3u3G-f7

Violence and aggression against NHS workers are on the rise. The NHS Staff Survey revealed that 𝟯𝟰.𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘄𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 have experienced harassment, bullying, or abuse from the public at work, with some reporting daily attacks. These statistics are shocking and unacceptable. Violence against healthcare professionals not only harms staff but also impacts patient care. Urgent action is needed to protect NHS workers from abuse, harassment, bullying, and violence in the workplace. https://lnkd.in/edVNKCBE

We welcome Ofcom’s increased powers under the Online Safety Act to hold social media companies accountable for harmful content. However, these need to go further. The Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) guidance 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 to ensure platforms take meaningful action against all forms of VAWG content online, including cyberstalking and abuse. Content that may not be illegal in and of itself can form part of a wider pattern of stalking which is illegal and causes severe distress and harm to victims. We call for stronger protections to prevent harm before it escalates. Social media companies must be required - not just encouraged - to tackle VAWG on their platforms. https://lnkd.in/eWs2_tJj
