We are delighted to announce that we have resecured our longstanding term contract with independent charity, Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). HRP manages five royal palaces in London, as well as one in Northern Ireland. Since 2016 we have been responsible for building fabric maintenance at HM Tower of London and Banqueting House. Following a competitive tender process, Sykes were successful in securing another iteration of the contract, together with extending our service to cover Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace. We are immensely proud to be entrusted with the upkeep of some of the world's most historic and iconic royal palaces and are excited to continue our partnership for a further term. #historicroyalpalaces #kensingtonpalace #toweroflondon #hamptoncourtpalace #kewpalace #banquetinghouse #history #london #maintenance #heritage #royalpalace #palace

About us
Established in 1759, Sykes & Son Limited is the UK's oldest building contractor. Trading for over 260 years, Sykes has evolved from a small specialist contractor - a glazier, plumber, decorator and small builder – into a medium sized multi-discipline contractor with an annual turnover around £35m. The company has three main workstreams: Building, Mechanical & Electrical and Maintenance. This diversity of self-delivered services allows us to offer a “one stop shop” solution to our clients. Furthermore, we have the flexibility to carry out minor works through to multi-million-pound projects. We are incredibly proud of the part that we have played in restoring, building, refurbishing and maintaining our capital’s heritage over the years. From royal palaces to world renowned museums, galleries and universities, we continue to forge long-term working relationships at London’s finest buildings. Our extensive list of long-term blue-chip clients is testimony to the core values that underpin the business – We Build Relationships; We Bring Expertise; We Are Professional; We Always Care. Whilst our heritage is a source of great pride, Sykes has continued to review working processes to ensure that up-to-date technology and systems are employed across the business. After being based on Essex Street for 261 years, Sykes relocated to a brand-new, purpose-built Bloomsbury office in late-2020. Sykes House provides a vastly improved environment to encourage collaborative working across our workstreams, together with enhanced facilities for meetings, training and staff welfare. Just a mile away, we remain as close to the heart of our operations in central London as our former home on Essex Street.

The teams at Sykes & Son Limited have been working hard on the Grand Staircase & Entrance Halls' specialist decorating project for The Fishmongers' Company. Alongside our in-house specialist and traditional decorators, our trusted subcontractors: Coventry Scaffolding, EV Bullen, J.E. Putney & Sons, and SJM French Polishers Ltd have been working just as hard. The subcontract teams also include Britain & Co Ltd, Luxury and Heritage Decoration and Hare & Humphreys, with whom Sykes & Son have entered into collaborative subcontracts. They have been making great strides to progress their works to an exceptional standard. As we pass the halfway point of the project, we continue to work with synergy alongside the Fishmongers’ Team, which includes Justin Birch MRICS for CBRE Project Management, Timothy Dolby (https://lnkd.in/dPaZxng3), and Bruce Kirk MSLL of CBG Light Perceptions. The lighting works are progressing well in close coordination with the extensive decorations. Working with a ‘one goal’ mentality, we think what has been accomplished by all so far looks excellent.

Sykes & Son Ltd have commenced a prestigious and ambitious project at Fishmongers’ Hall. Following great success in previous phases, namely specialist decorations, timber repairs, and lighting schemes in the ceremonial areas of the Vestibule, Drawing & Dining Rooms, and Committee Room, Sykes have been entrusted by The Fishmongers' Company and Justin Birch MRICS CBRE, the Surveyor of the Fabric, to restore the Hall’s Grand Staircase & Entrance Hall to a new decorative scheme by Tim Dolby of Dolby Design & Consultancy (https://lnkd.in/et-GXbQ9) Preparations are underway to exceedingly high standards. However, these are standards to which Sykes are well familiar. We continue to work collaboratively with our supply chain to ensure those standards are matched in all elements of the project. #thefishmongerscompany #sykesandson #cbreuk #restoration #decoration #heritage #historic #london #specialistdecorations #gilding #finedecoration

Sykes & Son’s project at The Old Curiosity Shop has been awarded the RICS Regional Award for Heritage & Conservation, London. This was only possible through our collaboration with Ayesa - UK and Ireland, LOM architecture and design, and of course the team at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The hard work of DOLMEN CONSERVATION & JOINERY LIMITED, FULL METAL JACKET LIMITED, and Sykes & Son’s in house decorations also created this success. We are looking forward to the National Awards in October! #conservation #restoration #rics #ricsukawards #london #heritage #construction #awards

Congratulations to our QHSE Manager Robert Watkins Grad IOSH AIFSM MIIRSM for completing the notorious Montane Summer Spine. Widely regarded as Britain's most brutal endurance race, the 268-mile challenge started on Sunday 16th June in Edale (Peak District) with competitors needing to reach The Border Hotel in Kirk Yelthom, Scotland within 156 hours. Rob completed the race in 145.23.20 hours, placing 35th overall. 59 of the 109 starters did not finish which shows just how gruelling the race really is. Rob said “the conditions on the first two days were horrific with immersion foot and hypothermia a real concern. Sleep deprivation and midges adding to the conditions meant the going was hard”. Rob undertook the walk to help fundraise for our charity of the year Hestia Charity. Thank you to all those who donated. Follow the link below if you wish to support ⬇

Last week, Sykes were honoured to be invited to Hestia’s annual Volunteer Awards. Our Managing Director, Chris O'Donnell had the pleasure of presenting the Supervisor of the Year Award. It was an inspiring event to celebrate the extraordinary hard work of their selfless volunteers. Hestia is a charity that supports adults and children in London and the South-East during times of crisis, including people who have experienced domestic abuse and modern slavery, people struggling with their mental health, older people and ex-offenders. Hestia were selected as our charity of the year for 2024 and we’re excited to continue working with them and help the thousands of women and children supported by Hestia to a life beyond crisis. Congratulations to all of those nominated, and the worthy winners! #Charity #Volunteering #Volunteer #London #LifeBeyondCrisis
