With quantum hitting mainstream headlines, how can companies effectively communicate this complex technology? Last week we brought together The Economist's Science Editor Alok Jha, brand expert and Syndicut Co-Founder, Nick Bromage, and our CEO Stephanie Forrest to tackle this challenge during our exclusive virtual 'fireside chat' “Communicating Quantum”. Some of the top takeaways include: 1️⃣ Start with the basics - Build public understanding now so when quantum becomes part of daily life (like AI today), people are prepared 2️⃣ Know your audience - The more you understand their needs and knowledge level, the better you can tailor your message 3️⃣ Tap into human emotions - Strong branding can make complex quantum concepts more memorable and accessible 💡 Want the full insights? Metaphors. We all learnt to spot them in English class, but these literary devices are more than just a technique used by authors and poets. Metaphors also play an important role in psychology, affecting how we understand and interpret different topics. This makes them particularly powerful in areas like science. During our fireside chat this week on “Communicating Quantum," Alok Jha, Science and Technology Editor at The Economist, spoke about the importance of using the right metaphors when explaining complex topics like quantum. He suggested the best metaphor should be memorable and communicate the complexity and reality of a topic without losing the audience. After all, how many of us are familiar with DNA being the “code of life”, or with mitochondria being the “powerhouse of the cell”? We all painted a picture in our head when Carl Sagan called the Earth “a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena”. A metaphor allows us to make concrete connections between abstract concepts and everyday experiences. They make the unfamiliar, familiar. Quantum technology is, for the most part, not something we interact with daily (yet). It remains, for now, something largely unfamiliar. According to Alok, a captivating metaphor for explaining quantum hasn’t come to light yet. So how would you explain quantum through a metaphor?

This week's word of the week is "World Model," reflecting an exciting shift in AI development from text and images to truly understanding 3D spaces. While current AI can predict words or generate images, world models aim to create complete digital twins of reality based on video input. Think of how your brain instantly understands and navigates physical spaces - that's what world models aspire to achieve. As Meta's Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun explains, it's the next step in AI's natural evolution from text to code to images to spatial intelligence. This isn't just theoretical, major players are investing heavily in this technology. World Labs, led by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, recently secured $230 million to develop world models. While we might be, as Yann LeCun predicts, a decade away from human-level AI understanding of physical spaces, this focus on spatial intelligence marks an important shift in how we're teaching machines to interpret our three-dimensional world. So next time you're effortlessly planning how to organise your desk or navigate a crowded room, remember - you're using a world model that AI is worlds away from mastering. #WordOfTheWeek #AI #SpatialIntelligence #Innovation #WeAreTFD

Another TFD client-inspired Word of the Week! Following Kolekti's launch of Narus, General Manager Adam Wignall brings us "Token" - the digital currency of AI language models. Think of tokens as the building blocks AI models use to process and understand text. They can be letters, words, or even parts of words, with each model having its own token limit that determines how much text it can handle. With 78% of workers bringing their own AI tools to work, often without proper oversight, managing these tokens securely becomes crucial. Narus offers a secure platform that connects to multiple AI models through APIs. It helps organisations manage their AI tokens responsibly by optimising usage across different models and letting teams share successful prompts. So next time you're crafting the perfect AI prompt, remember: you're allocating valuable tokens. Use them wisely! #WordOfTheWeek #AI #LanguageModels #DigitalTransformation #FutureOfWork
