We’re dedicated to empowering young people to fulfill their true potential through life-changing adventures at sea.

About us

We’re the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity, but becoming a sailor is not the only outcome. We’re a youth development charity that helps young people redefine their horizons through adventure learning at sea. We take young people aged 12-25 on residential youth sailing voyages onboard iconic yachts. Out on the water, under sail, they learn lessons that set them up for life and help them to realise their true potential. To support our mission, we also run a programme of adventure voyages for adults that directly subsidise our highly-effective youth development programme. We have a vision of society where the exclusion of young people and a lack of opportunities for them are things of the past. Together with our supporters, we are doing everything we can to help young people from all over the UK stand taller than ever before.

Congrats to Seren who has been awarded the Eddie Dunhill Cup following a South Coast Adventure voyage on board Challenger 2! 🏆 Thanks to the Eddie Dunhill Memorial Fund, Seren was one of the 12 young people gifted a place on the voyage. After hearing about the positive impact voyaging had on her friend, she decided to join and was thrilled with the confidence boost she gained from the experience. She said, "It's been incredible ... I'm so pleased I came". Every year, a repurposed trophy from Eddie's adventures is awarded to the young person who has made the biggest improvement on the voyage. Special thanks to Eddie's children for presenting Seren with the award. Seren has even been recommended as a watch leader, so we hope to see her back as a volunteer on another voyage soon! #YouthDevelopment

Challenger 3 crossed the finish line of ASTO Guernsey to Poole Small Ships Race 2024 Inspired by the RNLI’s 200th Anniversary at 16:29 on Wednesday, pulling into Poole Quay Yacht Haven just in time for a well-deserved hot shower and a restful night's sleep. Before the race, our youth crew had the pleasure of meeting the Duchess of Edinburgh, who wished them safe travels and good luck. 👑 Despite an impressive start to the race, the wind decided to take a break once the boats left Alderney. Skipper Ian said, "This left the ASTO fleet bobbing around." Even the original race leaders, who took a gamble on the Western side of the channel, found themselves stuck in a windless void, being carried westward by the tide. A few boats chose a more easterly route and managed to sneak ahead and claim victory. Challenger 3, taking a central path, was pushed towards Swanage before the weather gods finally blessed them with a favourable wind, allowing them to cross the finish line. All crew were proud of their finish time. The team is excited for tomorrow's celebrations at the RNLI College, complete with a BBQ and prize-giving ceremony. 🍔 Thanks to ASTO / UK Sail Training for organising this event and raising awareness of the impact and value of voyaging for young people. #ASTOGuernseyPoole2024 #Sailing #YouthDevelopment

Congrats to the Lions Shipshape Award 2024 Winner! 👏 Well done to Toby for being awarded the Lions #ShipshapeAward 2024 and winning a place on a TSYT 6-night voyage from Weymouth to Portsmouth. Skipper Adam and Mate Martha were full of praise for Toby's hard work and enthusiasm during his time on board. Adam noted, "Toby excels in this environment." Celebrating 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 at Cowes Week 2024. Today, we celebrate by recognising the incredible growth and outstanding commitment of our young people. We are immensely proud to see our young people engaging in a variety of activities at Cowes, applying the skills they have developed through their various #voyages with Tall Ships Youth Trust. Their growth in communication, confidence, self-esteem, resilence, public engagement, and sailing is truly inspiring. Throughout the week, our #youth have showcased their talents and development by speaking at events such as our Charity Day’s drink reception and our Women’s Day panel, as well as engaging with the public, TSYT staff and other volunteers at the marquee and in many other ways. At the Charity Day reception, young ambassadors Clare, Eli, and Charlotte spoke with passion, raw emotion, and experience. We are so proud of them. (Photo slide 1, left to right: David Hill (partner of Karl), Clare Turner, Kirsty F., Eli Noy, Karl Love (Chairman of IOW Council), Charlotte Mossop, and David Aisher). During the Women’s Day panel, young ambassadors and volunteers Charlotte, Kitty and India shared their unique journeys in maritime and how TSYT influenced their path, offering inspiration and engaging answers to audience questions. Additionally, our young people enjoyed a delightful trip to Alum Bay with the Royal Navy on P2000. Watching all TSYT young people blossom in their own unique personal development journey fills us with immense pride and reaffirms the impactful work we do. As we celebrate this next generation of leaders, we invite you to join us in supporting and nurturing these young individuals. Together, we can continue to help them reach their full potential and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities. #TSYT #youthdevelopment #outdoorlearning #cowesweek2024 #cowesweek

Meet Lucy Grodie- former General Manager of ASTO / UK Sail Training and Women's Day Panellist. With a career spanning over a decade in leadership roles, Lucy's journey is as captivating as the seas she sails. Most recently, Lucy was the Operations Manager for Seas Your Future, and before that, she dedicated 12 years as the General Manager of the umbrella body for UK Sail Training/ASTO. Before stepping into her managerial roles, Lucy was a full-time Sail Training Skipper and Mate. Her love for the sea is undying, and she still occasionally embarks on seafaring #adventures, most recently as a Skipper for the Sea Cadets. Lucy’s journey in sail training began as a young person, taking part in Tall Ships Races from age 18 on board ‘Morning Star.’ She served as a watch leader on several voyages on the STA schooners, where she first met TSYT’s Kirsty, and they have remained friends ever since. Meet Lucy at our 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 during Cowes Week on 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟑𝟎 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟐𝐩𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝐩𝐦 at the Island Sailing Club. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸-𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁. Freya first sailed with us a couple of years ago. Now she is aiming to set a new record as the youngest and first woman to solo sail around Great Britain and Ireland at 21 years old. She will cover 2,400 nautical miles and visit approximately 80 locations. Along her journey, she has been hosting talks with young people on mental health, sharing her insight and strategies to reduce the fear of asking for help. We were thrilled to have her stop off at Portsmouth and share her insights with students at the end of their residential voyage. Keep an eye out for her bright pink S&S SHE 31 named Pink Delta and don't forget to give her a wave of support! #MentalHealth #Sailing

Meet Kitty - TSYT Watch Leader and Women's Day Panellist Kitty has been dingy sailing since she was five and learnt to sail a topper at the Cotswolds Water Park. As a member of her local Scouts group with a love for watersports and the outdoors, her leader was the first to introduce her to TSYT at 14. On her journey to Watch Leader, she spent a week-long voyage exploring the Solent and sailed to the Channel Islands. Now 16 and completing her A-Levels, Kitty intends to take a gap year to sail and volunteer with us before heading to university to study special educational needs/disabilities. Of course, she plans to continue sailing in her holidays. Kitty attended the International Maritime Organization Day for Women in Maritime in May, proudly representing TSYT. It was an inspiring experience to connect with other women who have chosen careers in the maritime industry. She is excited to share her own journey and insights at our upcoming Women's Day Panel during Cowes Week. You can join this free, walk-in event on Tuesday, 30 July from 12pm to 2pm at the Island Sailing Club. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e3SdjsSR #WomenInMaritime #Maritime #CowesWeek
