We're the charity that saves lives at sea

About us

We are the charity that saves lives at sea. Volunteers make up 95% of our workforce – ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our people are selfless, dependable, trustworthy and courageous. These are our values and they underpin everything we do. Since our inception in 1824, demand for our lifesaving services has evolved significantly. We provide a 24-hour search and rescue service from 238 lifeboat stations around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, including four along the River Thames and four inland lifeboat stations. In addition, we operate a seasonal lifeguard service on more than 240 UK and Channel Island beaches and a specialist Flood Rescue Team ready to respond to severe flooding situations, both at home and around the world. Our sea and beach safety work is paramount and we are sharing our maritime expertise with like-minded international organisations to help save even more lives from drowning. With 98% of our total income coming from generous donations and legacies, we depend on our dedicated volunteers, supporters and staff to continue saving lives at sea. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a charity registered in England and Wales (209603), Scotland (SC037736), the Republic of Ireland (20003326), the Bailiwick of Jersey (14), the Isle of Man (1308 and 006329F), the Bailiwick of Guernsey and Alderney.

Today, we celebrate 200 years of saving lives at sea. Since we were founded on 4 March 1824, our lifesavers have saved over 146,000 lives – that's two lives every day on average. Whether that’s lifeboat crews launching at a moment’s notice, lifeguards patrolling our beaches, or our water safety teams sharing lifesaving skills at home and overseas, we’ve strived to save every one. We’re able to do this thanks to two constants in our 200-year history: our selfless volunteers, who give their time and commitment to save others, and the kindness of supporters like you, powering our lifesavers for 200 years and counting. Thanks to you, we can always answer the call. We’d love to hear your stories, thoughts and memories of the RNLI as we celebrate our 200th anniversary 👇 #RNLI #RNLI200 #200Years #SavingLivesAtSea #Volunteers #ThankYou #LifeboatCrew #Lifeguards

Last weekend, 200 Girlguiding members from across the South of England gathered at the RNLI College in Poole. They came along for a fun, hands-on day learning how to stay safe in and around the water. They even earnt their Mayday Water Safety Badges in the process. Guides, Rangers and Brownies, aged 7 to 18, explored the work we do here at the RNLI. They met our lifeboat and lifeguard teams, and learned how our engineers build lifeboats onsite too. In partnership with Girlguiding South West England, this event supports our mission to inspire the next generation of lifesavers. On hearing our lifeguards’ stories it was incredible to see many of them express interest in future roles with us. A powerful reminder of the difference we can make! A big thank you to everyone who contributed to empowering these young people and helping them explore future careers in lifesaving 💙 #Inspiraton #Careers #FutureOfWork #EmpoweringWomen #Lifesaving

Today, we're highlighting the incredible manufacturing work of our very own RNLI team at the Inshore Lifeboat Centre (ILC) on the Isle of Wight. Based in East Cowes, the ILC supplies and maintains over half of the lifeboats for our stations, as well as our lifeguard units. Within the ILC, a team of up to 70 highly skilled boat builders, fitters, electricians, and solutionists work to build and maintain up to 80 boats each year. This includes the inflatable B class and D class lifeboats, as well as lifeguards’ inshore rescue boats (IRBs). Our technicians operate across three buildings, supported by a team of office workers, store personnel, and apprentices. There’s a dedicated laminating shop, spray booth, machine shop, and welding bay specifically for the creation of our B class Atlantic inflatable lifeboats. At the RNLI, we rely on our project and production teams to build, repair, and maintain our lifeboats to the highest standards, ensuring they can withstand harsh weather conditions and protect our volunteers as they save lives at sea. #MFGDay24 #NMD2024 #BackingManufacturing

Working in partnership is critical to saving every one. Our partners and collaborators help us to prevent drowning. Here are just some of the incredible people we've been working with 👇 GAA: a water safety match made in Croke Park In July, our volunteers took to the pitch at Croke Park ahead of the All-Ireland senior football championship semi-final. Since 2017, The GAA have helped share water safety messages across Ireland - enabling us to reach new audiences and prevent drowning. The Black Swimming Association (BSA): ground-breaking collaborative research The damaging narrative that people from Black and Asian communities are less buoyant than people from white communities has led to a belief that people from these communities can't float. Together we're working to examine floating techniques, as well as the body composition of individuals, to understand whether biological factors contribute towards floating ability. The research will help us to refine our Float to Live water safety advice so it's effective for all. National Water Safety Forum (NWSF): lifesaving research put into action Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK and Bournemouth University were able to show a link between warm weather and the likelihood of drowning. When temperatures hit 25°C+, people are three times more likely to drown whilst swimming. The NWSF, which we sit on, took this research and put out targeted comms through its members to reach our individual audiences during heatwaves. Burts Snacks Ltd: packing a punch of flavour and purpose Limited edition RNLI takeover packs feature our volunteers from Shoreham Harbour and Scarborough. The packaging includes a QR code that links to our lifesaving Float to Live advice. Helly Hansen: floating 115 feet in the sky This year we launched Float to Live in style with the support of our partner, Helly Hansen. The eye-catching setting of Sky Pool, Embassy Gardens, helped our float content to stand out; we saw a huge increase in people watching our demonstration from the day across our social media channels. A person who'd floated before being rescued by us brought the importance of our safety messaging to life by telling his story too. Zoggs: swimming in support of safety Zoggs swimwear has launched an RNLI branded range of swim accessories to support safer swimming. A percentage of sales revenue will directly benefit our lifesavers too. Together we're working to create bespoke social-first content that will share cold water dip safety messaging. Zoggs UK General Manager told us that: 'The main driver of our product innovation is to allow people to enjoy the water. Safety is key to fulfilling that.' Our collaborations cover a huge range of people, organisations and corporations – harnessing expertise from across multiple disciplines. But all with one aim, to save lives at sea. #RNLI #HellyHansen #Burts #Zoggs #ParternshipWorking #DrowningPrevention #RNLI200 #GAA #BSA #WaterSafety #FloatToLive
