    Do pre-employment tests cause candidate attrition?   Yes, and no.   Here’s why👇   Organisations often hesitate to introduce pre-employment tests, fearing that candidates will drop out. But there's a common misconception at play…   Decision-makers often reflect on their own feelings about testing, rather than considering their target audience.   (Think: Senior HR pros vs. job-seeking college graduates)   Here's what we know:   👉 Personality tests (untimed and no right/wrong answers) lead to the least attrition. Many candidates even find the experience reflective and enjoyable.   👉 Ability/knowledge tests (timed and scored) tend to increase attrition. They're more stressful, but they're also some of the best predictors of job performance. But here’s the thing…   While some candidate drop-off is inevitable, it’s often the least committed or least qualified candidates who walk away.     Scaling early careers recruitment can be a daunting challenge for HR teams. When faced with high volumes of candidates, 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, and let's be honest—scaling CVs is equally impractical. Who has the time to read through hundreds, if not thousands, of CVs? Especially when many of them are generated by tools like ChatGPT. And time is cost. This means it's 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 your organisation more than necessary for 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 results. 📉 So, what's the solution? Instead of relying on these hiring methods, consider talent assessments: cognitive ability tests, personality assessments, and others.
