There really is a lot of scope in many aspects of anaerobic digestion to use artificial intelligence and machine learning. In addition to the whole feedstock, supply chain and energy pricing aspects, we certainly need a better understanding around the ‘edges of operation’ too - what the digester will do (and what the operator should do) under various perturbations in temperature, mixing, feeding, etc and, even better, how to prevent those in the first place where possible. I’d missed this - thanks Kathy Puffer for bringing it to my attention. It’s always great to hear Michael Short talk about this super AI4AD project.

Michael Short, Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey is conducting a project where artificial intelligence is used to optimize the productivity of biogas plants, particularly in the anaerobic digestion (AD) phase. AI tools, combined with mechanistic models and mass balances, improve 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲. The approach also includes the optimization of the management of raw materials and of the entire production cycle, through the use of a “digital twin” of the digester. https://bit.ly/400xG6q
