About us
The Baytree Centre is an educational charity (charity registration number 1175145) for women and girls, based in the heart of Brixton, south London. In response to local needs, we address poor housing conditions, homelessness, lack of language and basic skills, trauma due to difficult migration journeys and other barriers that can prevent our 600+ women and girls and their families from thriving. The services we have developed with and for our clients focus on education, training, and employability skills to enhance confidence and self-esteem, promote aspirations and opportunities, and improve the lives of migrants and refugees. Baytree’s education and support programmes are flexible and tailor services to the needs of the people living locally. All projects combine education with one-to-one mentoring. Social mobility mentoring gives women and girls the tools to identify and overcome their specific challenges and improve their life chances. Baytree’s relational and professional approach ensures women and girls recognise their own worth and take concrete steps to build a bright future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming Carmen Montero Mundt to The Baytree Centre, where her passion for financial empowerment and women’s leadership aligned beautifully with our mission. Carmen’s support for our holistic coaching and mentoring programme reaffirms the transformative role of mentoring in women’s lives. Why Coaching Matters At The Baytree Centre, we know that every woman deserves a chance to thrive. Our Coaching Programme is designed to tackle the unique challenges that vulnerable women and girls face, from education and employability to emotional well-being and financial stability. Through one-to-one support, our mentors help participants develop essential life skills, regain confidence, and take steps toward a brighter future. Our results speak for themselves: 76% of participants report improved confidence and mindset 79% have achieved greater financial stability, mastering essential budgeting skills and receiving personalised financial advice Success stories like Rayan’s—a Sudanese refugee who found fulfilling work through our long-term mentoring and employment coaching—highlight the life-changing impact of this programme. Carmen Mundt was particularly impressed by the depth of Baytree’s programmes and the lasting change they foster. Her commitment to supporting The Baytree Centre and WONDER Foundation helps pave the way for more women to gain financial independence, rise into leadership roles, and unlock their potential. Advocacy and support like Carmen’s are essential to shaping a brighter future for women and girls. Empowering women doesn’t just change individual lives—it uplifts entire communities. When a woman gains confidence, stability, and self-reliance, the positive impact ripples out to her family and future generations. We’ve been awarded a grant from the TNL Community Fund! 👏🏻 The National Lottery Community Fund supports grassroots organisations dedicated to uplifting women facing dire circumstances. 🌍 This grant will empower us to continue our mission of supporting women and girls from some of the most deprived wards in Lambeth. At the Baytree Centre, we work with women facing a complex array of challenges, including illiteracy, insecure housing, and trauma. Approximately 60% of the women we support have experienced trauma and violence, while 80% live in areas affected by violent crime. Many are migrants and refugees, grappling with illiteracy in both their native language and English, as well as chronic health issues such as diabetes and arthritis. One of our service users, Marie, shared her experience: “Baytree has been a lifeline for me. They helped me gain my refugee status, find a home, and learn English. They also supported my trauma through their kind approach and patience... Now I have a job, a house, and I’m actively involved in my daughter’s progress at school. I feel happy, confident, and finally settled in my new country.” 💭💛 Baytree’s work is guided by the needs of the women we serve, identified through focus groups, surveys, and one-to-one interviews. We actively participate in local forums to stay in tune with the broader needs of our community. Our impact over the past 3 years highlights the difference we make: 88% of women improved employability (up from 69%) 93% of women increased their skills (up from 79%) 98% of women improved family stability (up from 79%) 92% of women reported better health in body and mind (up from 68%) 90% of women reported a stronger support network This grant will further our mission and help create lasting change in the lives of women like Marie. It was great having Alleyn's School today!!! So much energy
Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Year 11 students from Alleyn’s School for a Hackathon at The Baytree Centre The students took on three challenges we set, including one focused on recruiting volunteers to become mentors. As the Mentoring Coordinator, I shared how our programme operates, with mentors meeting mentees weekly for an academic year, and discussed our current volunteer recruitment strategies. The students offered inspiring and creative ideas to enhance our efforts. It was a fantastic day connecting with both students and teachers. A big thank you to Tallulah Pollock for organising such a brilliant event and thanks to Ruby Tait for your contribution! #Hackathon #VolunteerRecruitment #YouthMentoring #TheBaytreeCentre #Collaboration #InspiringTheFuture

🌍 International Day of the Girl: Let's Turn the Numbers Around 🌍 Today, on International Day of the Girl, we’re shining a light on the global issue of gender inequality and the urgent need to support girls in accessing education and opportunities. 📊 Did you know? 132 million girls around the world are out of school. 1 in 4 girls aged 15-19 globally is neither in education, employment, nor training. Girls in conflict-affected areas are 2.5 times more likely to be out of school than boys. Closer to home, girls from low-income families in the UK often face challenges such as limited access to educational support and a lack of safe spaces for personal growth. This is where The Baytree Centre steps in. Through our programmes, we are working to create a level playing field by providing educational, emotional, and practical support to girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. At Baytree, we are proud to say: 90% of girls who join our programmes report feeling more confident and better equipped to achieve their goals. 85% of girls improve their well-being and social connections after participating in our initiatives. 70% of girls show significant improvements in their academic achievements, unlocking doors to brighter futures. But our work is far from over. We need your help to keep driving change for the girls who need it most. Here’s how you can help: Donate to support our programmes and help more girls access life-changing opportunities. https://lnkd.in/emHJ-_rR Share this post to raise awareness of the urgent need for action. Partner with us to empower girls through sponsorship, volunteering, or fundraising. Together, we can turn the numbers around and give every girl the chance to thrive. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/emHJ-_rR #DayOfTheGirl #GirlsEducation #EmpowerGirls #WomensEmpowerment #MakeADifference #CharityWork #NonProfitLeadership #BaytreeCentre #SocialImpact
