Bringing unique radiology innovations to the UK supporting faster diagnosis and treatment of patients
Thanks to BIR for organising a great couple of days focused on AI solutions. Learning from current experience of AI and making sure the future is sustainable, prioritised effectively and integrated is really important. Congratulations to Gerald on his recent appointment as Professor and Scotland’s first Head of AI in medicine at the University of Aberdeen! The BIR AI Congress has been a brilliant opportunity to connect with experts and catch up with some familiar faces. 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥- 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞! 😃 At the The British Institute of Radiology #AI congress today Dr Geraldine Dean and Ernest Montañà Ortiz from TMC / Unilabs delivered a masterclass on real-world AI implementation in teleradiology. With 18 AI tools deployed across 7 countries and 1,000+ users, their experience is deeply practical. They shared their four-phase AI framework: 1️⃣Exploration – Start with a need, not a tool. 2️⃣Preparation – Deep validation, stakeholder alignment, and market scouting. 3️⃣Live Use – Gradual rollouts, focus groups, human-AI workflow feedback. 4️⃣Business Impact – Reassess ROI, clinical benefit, and radiologist satisfaction. Key takeaways: 🔸Local nuance trumps universal rules. Tailored framework to fit your problem and people, not just one-size-fits-all. 🔸Validation isn’t just technical. It uncovers unexpected human behavior (different reporting practices across countries). 🔸Monitoring must include the human. Bias isn’t just in the model—it’s in us too (think HUMAN drift, not just model drift) A standout quote: “Frameworks should be living documents. What worked yesterday might not work across borders—or even tomorrow.” Great job to Dr Geraldine Dean Ernest Montañà Ortiz and team for sharing not just successes, but the lessons and friction points that come with scaling AI safely. If you’re implementing AI in radiology (or trying to), this talk was gold!
