The Building Crafts College

On Wednesday, I had the privilege to lead a construction trip to the Building Crafts College in Stratford, London. We were treated to a tour of their state-of-the-art workshop facilities, and in the afternoon we had the opportunity to try stone carving led by maker-in-residence Max Lawson. Thank you to Selena Bolingbroke and the Worshipful Company of Carpenters for their kind invitation and hospitality. For National Apprenticeship Week 2025 #NAW, we had a chat with our apprentices, Cameron, Harry and Soley , while they were working at The Building Crafts College, to get their thoughts on why they decided to undertake an apprenticeship... Here's what they said:

This week started well with the opening of the new entrance to Stratford station and a chance to showcase the benches made by talented The Building Crafts College graduate Jonny Axford on which the Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, happily perched!

24 students from Stepney All Saints School had a fantastic day at The Building Crafts College in Stratford, East London yesterday. The day provided a brilliant insight into careers in carpentry, bricklaying and even stonemasonry - one of only four colleges in the UK to offer this specialised course! As well as touring the college facilities and hearing from Beau Bespoke, a leading employer about how to start a career in construction, students also had the chance to gain practical experience and try out some of the crafts for themselves. Students told us they left feeling more motivated, inspired, and excited about their future options. All who attended agreed they benefited, sharing: “It opened up my mindset more, and helped show me how to go on a path I believe I could be successful in.” “I enjoyed how there were engaging activities that allowed us students to see how good we are at craftsmanship and to see what it's like in this industry.” Thank you to The Portal Trust for making this day happen and for sparking our collaboration with Stepney All Saints School and The Building Crafts College. We are seeking a new tutor to work alongside our experienced Construction teaching team to help deliver the Apprenticeship standards for this programme.
