Raising vital funds for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

About us

The Christie charity exists to raise funds and receive donations for the benefit of the patients of The Christie so that they can be offered access to leading treatments, outstanding care and the opportunity for the best outcomes. The Christie charity raises money for a range of vital projects and initiatives focusing on four main areas: research, care and treatment, education and extra patient services. The charity helps delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS can fund, enabling our patients to have access to the best possible care, research and treatment possible. Without the support of our fantastic fundraisers we would not be able to give our patients and their families the level of care and support that we do. Patients are at the heart of everything we do and that’s why The Christie charity is committed to continually improving the patient experience.

Stuart Hale, UK General Manager at Brother Sewing Machines Europe GmbH , recently took on The Nullarbor Trial to raise funds for The Christie Charity. 👏 The Nullarbor Plain is a vast area of flat, almost treeless, arid country in southern Australia and can be challenging to cross. The former Christie patient completed the epic 4,885km ride from Melbourne to Perth by motorbike over 10 days. 🦘 🏍️ Stuart said “It was a fantastic journey, the longest ride I’ve ever done by far. It was challenging at times, especially spending eight hours at a time in the saddle in what is mostly very harsh terrain. But there were so many highlights along the way such as riding into Ferguson Valley with its Beautiful rolling hills and green pastures.” Stuart was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and underwent surgery at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust to remove his cancer, he took on the challenge to raise awareness and fundraise for patients. Describing his cancer journey, Stuart said "Looking back over the year leading up to my diagnoses, the symptoms were so evident, but I believed them to be something that one gets as you enter your fifties - nothing to worry about. When I was told I had cancer, it was a real shock and took a while to sink in, but I was determined not to let the experience shape me. “I had surgery at The Christie to remove the cancer and now I’m well on the road to recovery. I’m so grateful for the treatment I received, the staff were absolutely amazing and I knew I wanted to give something back. “I’m happy to now be in a position where I can help other patients by fundraising, I’ve raised over £6,000 for The Christie and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported.” Feeling inspired? If you’re thinking of taking on a challenge for The Christie Charity, no matter how big or small, our team is on hand to help. 👇

Matt Turner from one of our corporate partners Belle Vue Manchester Ltd recently took on the White Collar Fighter - Charity Boxing Experience for The Christie Charity! 🥊 White Collar Fighter is a boxing experience that takes beginners who have never boxed before and trains them for their first-ever fight for charity. 👏 Matt received treatment at The Christie 25 years ago as a child. His cousin, Jackie, was also treated at The Christie for bowel cancer and unfortunately passed away in 2020. Matt decided to take on his challenge to raise funds in memory of Jackie and as a way to give back for the treatment and care they both received over the years. 💙 Describing his boxing challenge, Matt said "The training was really good and quite intense at parts. It is all led by professional coaches who are all boxers. You get involved in an 8-week camp with two sessions a week, plus any extra training you want to do yourself. "The night was a sell-out which was brilliant! Then the fight itself was fantastic and I am over the moon to say I won the fight in 1 min 27 seconds by knock out. "My advice to anyone thinking of trying a charity boxing match is go for it! It's not just the fight but the training and fundraising that makes it so enjoyable. Make sure you attend every single training session, make the most of your coach's experience, and get a good feel for the sport. It's fun and physically challenging at times, but such an amazing experience!" Matt has raised £905 from his match, adding to a whopping £4,515 he's personally raised since 2021. 👏 Would you get in the ring for The Christie? 👇 #corporatefundraising #charityoftheyear #whitecollarfighter #charityboxing

In a remarkable demonstration of commitment and dedication, 9 consultant surgeons from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust will swap their scrubs for running vests this weekend to take on the Manchester Half Marathon. 🩺🏃 The team, organised by urological surgeon Aziz Gulamhusein, aims to raise essential funds for The Christie Charity to support patients and their families during their cancer journey. "Every day, we have the privilege of seeing the incredible work The Christie Charity does to support our patients—not only through funding cutting-edge research and treatments but also by providing emotional and practical support to patients and their families during what is often the most difficult time of their lives. "We wanted to do more than just talk about the difference the Charity makes; we wanted to take action, to give something back. Running the half marathon together as a team feels like the perfect way to do that. It’s a physical challenge for us, but it pales in comparison to the challenges our patients face every day. We’re proud to do our bit to ensure the vital work of The Christie Charity continues." - Aziz Gulamhusein, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon Full story 👉 https://bit.ly/3zDwlYn

MyChristie-MyHealth allows patients to tell their clinical team how they’re feeling before their next consultation. This helps to involve patients in their care and can improve symptom management and quality of life. 💙 This game-changing service at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust wouldn’t exist without the support of The Christie Charity and our amazing fundraisers. 👏 Take a look at the difference the service is making to patients. 👇

We're celebrating the fifth anniversary of our cancer symptom monitoring service, MyChristie-MyHealth. Over 20,000 patients, across 30 different services, have filled in over 60,000 online questionnaires since we first introduced it in 2019. The Christie is the first centre in the UK to routinely introduce cancer symptom management questionnaires on such a large scale. Why are they important? Research has shown that patients using the questionnaire will tolerate treatment better and live well for longer. They also feel more involved in their care. The Christie team won the Greater Manchester Cancer Innovation Award for the service in 2022. More about MyChristie-MyHealth 👉 https://bit.ly/3XQzdua

Friday Knight works in The Christie NHS Foundation Trust's education team, she's also a volunteer for The Christie Charity 👏 Friday sees first hand the difference The Christie Charity makes at the hospital, so wanted to help out collecting donations and spreading awareness of The Christie Charity at the #Festwich music festival. “From a practical point of view I see the difference that the Charity makes on a daily basis within the hospital. For me, education is fundamental to supporting our current and future workforce to deliver excellent patient care and research. Our team have benefitted from support from the Charity in funding a variety of learning opportunities and resources, and this was a small way of saying thank you. "It was also wonderful to meet so many people at the event who spoke so movingly of their experience of The Christie, either as patients or caring for patients. To hear how our workforce make a difference on a daily basis helps me understand just how important it is to provide the highest quality learning experiences for all our staff and students.” - Friday Knight – Christie staff member & charity volunteer If you think you could help The Christie Charity by coming along to local events, please get in touch. 👇

Pupils at Quest Trust’s five schools and Playpals nurseries across Wigan and Bolton have raised over £6,100 for The Christie Charity! 👏 Playpals nurseries did a bake sale fundraiser, full of various yummy treats to sell. 🍰 Pupils in the primary schools took part in the Christie Bear Spelling Challenge. This fun challenge helps pupils to practise their spelling and improve their literacy skills whilst raising money. 🐻 Students at The University Collegiate School, Bolton participated in the 60 for the Christie challenge. 60 miles is the average distance a patient travels for cancer treatment in the UK so students were tasked with completing 60 maths challenges as part of a whole school ‘Bingo Bonanza’. 📐➗ ✖️ Marc Doyle, Chief Executive Officer at the Trust said “The generosity of our pupils and their families know no bounds. It’s one of the many examples this year of our pupils going above and beyond to support the communities we serve. As always, it’s a reminder of how lucky I am to work with such caring families.” The Trust was presented with a Christie Challenge medal. This stunning medal is divided into six parts to represent each fundraiser. 🏅 Want to get your kids school involved in Fundraising activities for The Christie? Check out the link below. 👇
