Breaking the cycle of domestic abuse and giving babies the best start in life.

About us

At The For Baby's Sake Trust, we provide parents with trauma-informed, therapeutic support to break the cycle of domestic abuse and give their baby the best start in life. Domestic abuse can impact lives for generations. Our work transforms the life-chances of whole families and empowers them to move forward in positive change, starting with the baby. The baby is at the heart of everything we do. Our innovative programme of therapeutic support - For Baby's Sake - is an evidence based response to domestic abuse, trauma and what babies need from conception to age two (1001 days). For Baby’s Sake empowers expectant parents to make changes that last, for themselves and their baby. The For Baby’s Sake Trust (originally named the Stefanou Foundation) was set up philanthropically by Stelio Stefanou. His founding vision was to tackle the root causes of disadvantage and vulnerability, focusing on very young babies who do not have a voice. Stelio chaired the charity for 14 years, providing inspirational leadership until stepping down from the Board in December 2022. The For Baby’s Sake Trust continues to combine our highly innovative and transformational work with families, through For Baby’s Sake, with driving broader system change, creating and gathering evidence, sharing learning, and influencing policy at local and national level.

🧠 Recent ground-breaking research marking the launch of The Maternal Brain project, has captured the "sweeping reorganisation" of the brain during #Pregnancy, using scans to show how this transformative period affects areas associated with emotional regulation, social interaction, and self-referential thought. This study offers profound insights into the neurological changes that prepare a person for #Parenthood: https://lnkd.in/eyvDiFNM At The For Baby’s Sake Trust, we are committed to supporting parents through the emotional challenges of #Pregnancy, #Birth, and early parenthood. As highlighted in the research, changes in the brain are not only physiological but also deeply connected to emotional wellbeing. The study’s lead researcher notes how pregnancy "shapes the brain in ways that enable adaptation to the challenges of parenthood," which resonates strongly with our work helping parents create safe, nurturing environments for their children, free from conflict and trauma. This research underscores the importance of recognising and supporting the mental and emotional health of expectant parents. By fostering healthy brain development in parents, we can improve the emotional safety of children, breaking cycles of trauma and domestic abuse.

Do you provide a service to families? The team at The For Baby's Sake Trust had a valuable training session today with Matt Taylor-Roberts, MA 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ from Proud 2 b Parents. We learnt more about the experiences of LGBT+ parents and carers, exploring ways to enhance inclusivity. I highly recommend this training to all family service providers. The session covered terminology and diverse paths to parenthood and delved into the impact of trauma in the lives of LGBT+ parents and carers, including on parenting styles. We also learnt about identity pride and other important resilience factors. We concluded by considering how we can advance trauma-informed care and LGBT+ affirming practices. Absolutely brilliant 👏 Learn more about this impactful training at: https://lnkd.in/ehgpZAU9

  • The concept of 'safe separation' is essential when addressing domestic abuse, particularly when children are involved. Safe separation, in the context of #DomesticAbuse, refers to the process of ending a relationship in a manner that prioritises the safety and wellbeing of all parties involved; this is crucial as separation is often a time of heightened risk for escalating abuse. For Baby’s Sake is designed with the flexibility to support parents regardless of their relationship status. Our King’s College London evaluation revealed that over 50% of For Baby’s Sake parents choose to safely separate during the programme. This highlights the importance of breaking the cycle of domestic abuse while ensuring that parents can still effectively co-parent their baby.   For Baby’s Sake is built on the principle that both parents must be willing, consenting participants, and we never mandate contact between them. Safe separation allows parents to prioritise their well-being and that of their child, whether they continue their relationship or not. Our ultimate goal is to empower parents to provide a nurturing and secure environment for their baby, free from the cycle of abuse. #BreakTheCycle
