Recently, the Ethiopia Hotspot met with four survivor-led organisations to reflect on successes and achievements of the past year, as well as what their aspirations are for the Survivor Coalition the Freedom Fund is supporting. They reflected on the importance of the Survivor Leadership Fund as a springboard in the formation of their organisations, being involved in policy development and civil society responses to migration and returnee reintegration, as well as the follow-on opportunities they have accessed after attending the Global Migrant Workers Conference and new grants from Walk Free. They have many aspirations for the years to come including reducing human trafficking from Ethiopia to the Middle East, having national policies put into practice, overcoming the root causes of irregular migration and strengthening more survivor leaders and organisations.
About us
The Freedom Fund is a global fund with the sole aim of helping end modern slavery. We are a catalyst in the global effort to end modern slavery, working in the countries and sectors where it is most prevalent. Through our investments and support, we aim to shift power, so that frontline organisations and communities can shape and drive the change required to bring modern slavery to an end. By partnering with survivors and those at risk of slavery as well as visionary investors, governments and anti-slavery organisations, we bring together the knowledge, capital and will needed to dismantle the systems that allow slavery to exist and thrive. 1. We raise capital to fund and support our partner organisations and communities on the frontlines of ending slavery and exploitation. 2. We foster collaboration so frontline partners and local communities build their collective power. 3. We work to shift power within the local and global systems that create the conditions for modern slavery to exist. 4. We measure and share the impact of our work to drive greater levels of investment into ending modern slavery.

Tomorrow sees the start of a three-day workshop to launch the Freedom Fund's inception year in Uganda to address child trafficking and exploitation. In collaboration with our six partners Karamoja Women Umbrella Organization, Nascent Research Organization, Rural Resilience Community Empowerment for Sustainable Development (RRCESD), Straight Talk Foundation, African Youth Alliance Development Organization (AYADO) and Grassroots Alliance for Rural Development, and alongside research partner The AfriChild Centre, we aim to build strong partnerships and align on strategies, ensuring a shared understanding of the local context and a clear plan for action, to effectively prevent, identify and respond to child exploitation in Karamoja.

"To be here I had to break many walls. Some of which I have built for myself, like thinking I should 'know my place' and questioning what I was doing. And I see that we truly need to be out there building and reshaping ideas and voices." "I never saw myself as a leader before, but today I understand that I can be one. Not only for the transexual population, but other people as well. Like people who live on the streets, incarcerated people and victims of human trafficking, as I finally recognised the existence of a shared leadership." ~ Karlla Salles, from Tururu Collective, is a participant in the Freedom Rising program in Brazil.
