The Magna Carta for #Seafarers finally signed by President Marcos on 23rd September 2024 👏 IMEC are happy to advise that, after years of debate and negotiations, the Magna Carta for Seafarers was finally signed into law by President Marcos yesterday. This has been a long journey, full of highs and lows, false dawns and pyrrhic victories but we are now hopeful that, with a few essential provisions agreed, the industry will start on its path to recovery that so many of us have longed for during these difficult years. Our thanks for reaching this milestone go to the many organisations that have relentlessly pushed this issue with us over the years, from the International Group of P&I Clubs and its local representatives to the local manning associations to the Department of Migrant Workers, the Department of Transport and Marina and last but certainly not least Associated Marine Officer's and Seamen's Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP) and @APSU, the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) affiliate unions in the country. It goes without saying of course that none of this would have been possible if not for the commitment to the welfare of Filipino seafarers shown by President Marcos whose foresight in creating IACGMA after our meeting in December 2022 was instrumental to this outcome #Maritime #Shipping #MartimeShipping #MagnaCarta

This week, our Executive Committee and Recruitment and Training Committee are in Singapore for their mid-year meetings. On Tuesday in addition we held a productive Recruitment and Training workshop, where we collaborated to discuss and develop strategies for attracting, training, and retaining maritime professionals. IMEC would like to thank Mike Watt CEng CMarEng FIMarEST and his team at Bureau Veritas | Marine & Offshore's Future Shipping Team for South East Asia & Pacific for their half day workshop on alternative fuels and artificial intelligence, Chris Chatterton for his session on Methanol with Green Marine and finally to Ben Bailey for his session on Mental Wellbeing of seafarers from the Mission to Seafarers. Last week, our Head of Training, Rob Gale, and Training Officer, Gary Mills, represented IMEC at Naughtica 5.0, the largest inter-college fest and exhibition of maritime training in India, featuring over 700 cadets showcasing their talents. During the event, Rob Gale delivered a presentation on IMEC’s activities in India to the all in attendance in addition to an inspiring speech to more than 80 school students, highlighting the opportunities within the maritime sector. The event was held over two days at two separate venues featuring 15 events ranging from nautical competitions to sports including swimming, badminton and table tennis. At both locations, the atmosphere was fantastic. The event taught the cadets unity, teamwork but equally the awareness that their contribution to this industry as future maritime leaders will be significant. Launched in September 2023, the IMEC India Cadet Training Programme is a comprehensive Deck and Engine programme designed to equip Indian nationals with essential Deck and Engineering skills necessary to become officers in the Merchant Navy. IMEC has partnered with three of India’s top training institutions, accredited by the IMU and formally endorsed by Fosma Maritime Institute & Research Organisation Kolkata and MASSA. This collaboration ensures that IMEC scholars receive the highest quality maritime training, emphasizing sustainable practices, responsible education principles, and professional excellence. Find out more about our cadet programme here: https://lnkd.in/eAri4TFu IMEC would like to thank those who supported the event including the six IMEC Cadets who assisted with the booth during the two days. #IMEC #Naughtica #India #Maritime #CadetTraining #Cadets #Seafarers Offing Group
