Is there a crisis in young people's mental health? Working as a therapist has taught me how incredibly important the formative years are for someone's wellbeing and mental health. Adolescence is a time of massive biological, psychological, and social development, and disruptions to those developments can be so destabilising. What complex factors are working together to drive the higher rates of mental ill health that have been seen in adolescents recently, and what can we do about it? These are big questions, so they deserve big answers. It's been such a pleasure to work with Pat McGorry and the team on this Commission on youth mental health for Lancet Psychiatry. Youth mental health is entering dangerous phase, say experts ⤵️ In The Lancet Public Health, a new Commission suggests the mental health of young people has been declining over the past two decades. Several global megatrends are implicated, including: – Inaction on climate change – Intergenerational inequality – Adversity linked to the COVID-19 pandemic While mental ill-health accounts for at least 45% of the overall burden of disease in people aged 10–24 years, only 2% of health budgets are devoted to mental health care. “This publication is the first definitive guide to youth mental health globally, outlining the current state of play and making the economic, moral and political case for investing in better research, models of care and access to youth mental health care for young people everywhere”, said lead author, Prof Patrick McGorry. Every year, more than 2 million girls are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) before the age of 5.⁠ ⁠ To reach the Sustainable Development Goal 5.3 target of eliminating the practice by 2030, progress would need to be 27 times faster than achieved in the past decade. ⁠ In The Lancet, an Editorial states, “health-care workers must uphold the principles of medical ethics and be advocates against FGM in all its forms.
