Did you know… • The first English Language dictionary was written by Samuel Johnson and published on 15 April 1755. • Noah Webster learned Sanskrit to write his dictionary. • Fake words have sometimes appeared in dictionaries over the centuries, either by mistake, such as phantomnation in 1864, and intentionally, as esquivalience, to protect their copyright. • There are a few weird dictionaries out there, including Wye's Dictionary Of Improbable Words and Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure, and Preposterous Words. • According to the Global Language Monitor (GLM), 800-1,000 new words are added to English language dictionaries every year.
