Unlike large corporates, fast-growth companies don’t have the luxury of unlimited budgets to build expansive leadership teams. Founders and CEOs must make strategic, high-impact hires to balance their leadership team across essential functions. Functional balance means spreading leadership expertise wisely, avoiding the trap of hiring only within the founder’s comfort zone, which can lead to gaps in critical areas. A balanced team that includes strategic, operational, and innovation-focused roles gives the business agility and resilience. With access to a Functional Balance chart, consultants within our businesses support Clients by identifying each leader’s strengths and alignment with core business needs. Working with high-growth Client businesses means getting the leadership mix right from the start. It can be the difference between sustained growth and potential stagnation. It is great to see LCap leading the conversation on gender diversity in private equity in Kim Elsesser's latest Forbes article. The piece sheds light on the significant gender imbalance in PE-backed company leadership—and the impact this has on performance. Our data in the Leadership Capital Report shows that diverse teams drive better outcomes in the value-creation journey, yet only 17% of leadership positions are held by women at exit. Our findings reveal a critical “window” for diversity: the first 12-18 months post-investment. If diversity isn’t prioritised within this period, the likelihood of building a diverse, high-performing leadership team for exit diminishes greatly. Early action is essential to achieving successful, balanced management teams. Read more in the article below. #diversity #privateequity #leadership #femaleleadership
A new report reveals that companies that receive private equity backing see a significant drop in female leadership. The percentage of women in leadership positions in these companies dropped by 20% during the private equity investment holding period. In fact, 80% of the leadership hires were men. “As female leaders often join PE-backed businesses from outside the usual talent pool, and via a diverse search process, a failure to look beyond the ‘tried and tested’ could have exacerbated the lack of diversity for this cohort of exiting businesses," the report authors conclude. In other words, they didn't put in the effort to look outside their own networks.
