Foundations have been responding to the recent racist violence. In today's blog, ACF's head of practice Jim Cooke explores the immediate actions ACF members have taken, including:  ✅ Taking an active stance  ✅ Checking in with grantees/partners  ✅ Meeting urgent funding needs  ✅ Having a flexible and trust-based approach to funding  ✅ Reaffirming existing commitments to long-term racial justice funding  ✅ Supporting their own staff. #Foundations also recognise that much more work will be needed in the months and years ahead to counter the riots’ root causes and pursue a more just and equitable society. We will share more next week about how foundations can respond in the longer term. A message to our partners It is horrifying to see far-right, racist, Islamophobic and anti-migrant violence in parts of the UK. These attacks are an extension of the scapegoating and vilifying of migrants, Muslims, Black people and people of colour, and minoritised communities which many of our grant partners work so hard to challenge every day. We stand with you and with all organisations carrying out this vital work, and are inspired by the communities that are coming together to protect and support each other. Like many funders, we know that these attacks are having a significant impact on our grant partners. Yesterday we wrote to all our grant partners to let them know that our thoughts are with them and the communities they work with, and to ask them to get in touch with us if they require any urgent support that we might be able to address. We would like to be as supportive as possible, so we want to reassure you that: ➡ We are open to changes in delivering work funded by LEF. This is always true, but we recognise that dealing with current pressures may mean changes have to happen at very short notice without time to talk to us first. ➡ We can be flexible about the timing for work funded by LEF, as well as the dates for reporting to us. ➡ We recognise this is a rapidly changing situation and we do not expect grant partners to keep us regularly informed of developments, but are keen to hear from partners if there are ways we can help. We are looking forward to our July meeting of the Social Justice Funders Group (SJFG), which will be held in person next Tuesday 30 July from 10-11:30 am. We’d like to extend a massive thank you to Debevoise & Plimpton for kindly hosting us again – we are really looking forward to seeing everyone in person, and this should be a wonderful event. I had an intense but rewarding time at the The Legal Education Foundation Justice First Fellowship residential. I am terrible at remembering to take ‘people pictures’ but here is a random selection of Dundee snaps. My favourite part of the weekend without doubt, was getting to know my fellow Cohort 10 fellows. It was also lovely to speak with some of the previous Fellows. Despite it being physically taxing, there was something so energising about speaking to interesting, passionate people who share a commitment to social justice. I may be utterly exhausted and it may take a good few days to recover, but at least I feel mentally energised 😂
