It has been a busy week for our Outreach team 💚 To close out the week, Laura Dennis & Emma Knipe delivered some de-escalation training at Unipart to Early Career Teachers (ECT) Our de-escalation training is designed to empower staff and build confidence in working with behaviour which feel challenging. The course will provide staff with practical de-escalation tools and a range of strategies to foster a calm and respectful learning environment. If you would like to find out more about the training you can visit: https://lnkd.in/e7QBwFKD #mulberrybush #outreach #staff #training #earlycareerteachers #education #cpd

Transforming the lives of all those affected by childhood trauma
About us
Our work transforms the lives of all those affected by childhood trauma, through specialist therapeutic services. Our belief is that we have something special that we want to share with others and from which many could benefit. Founded in 1948, we are proud of our strong Therapeutic Community heritage and continue to build on how it informs our practice and services, enhancing the links between; Practice, Teaching and Research. The heart of the charity’s practice expertise is The Mulberry Bush School in Standlake, Oxfordshire. The Mulberry Bush Outreach service provides training, consultation and support to schools, care services and organisations working with challenging or vulnerable children, their families and communities. The Mulberry Bush is committed to research in therapeutic residential and foster care. MB3 (The Mulberry Bush Third Space) is located in Toddington, Gloucestershire and offers a ‘haven and reflective space’ for meaningful experiences. Visitors and colleagues recognise our systemic integrity; by that, they mean that we practise what we preach, that we’re open about the complexities of what we do; and that everyone here, from CEO to part-time gardener, plays a vital role in achieving a positive outcome for all those who come to us for help. We set up our consultancy service to help others in related sectors to do the same. We support you to uncover your ‘why’, to make it meaningful to everyone in your organisation, and to ensure its guiding presence is felt every day, in every facet of your work.

More people need to read this 👀 https://lnkd.in/dFjswYhK This article highlights what has been known for many years, that the system for supporting this group of vulnerable children is massively failing. What is needed is a radical alternative, a model which understands why young children are getting into the criminal justice system in the first place. A model that is underpinned by a moral, as well as political, framework which builds a system that supports and educates children and young people to help get them out of Youth Offender Institutions and re-join society. For this to happen we need a model that moves away from just locking them up to one which recognises them as vulnerable young people. This means re-skilling our workforce to not only work differently in meeting these needs but in working together - bringing health, social care, education and criminal justice together to meet the needs of the children. It has been an exciting period for the Mulberry Bush to be working with Oasis Restore, in Kent, as they open the first secure setting in the country as a way to tackle the issues named in this article. Oasis Restore have adopted a completely new therapeutic training programme for the staff as part of their model and it will be exciting to see the impact on the young people. Only when we have effective, and well trained, staff teams in place can we meet the needs of these young people. But this is going to take time, investment and bravery to do something different. As a country we signed and ratified the UN Charter for the Rights of the Child so lets deliver what we agreed, which includes access to education. #mulberrybush #youthjustice #youngoffenders #youthoffenderinstitutions #oasisrestore #support #therapeutic #training

Understanding Emotional Dysregulation 🧠😶 Emotional dysregulation is an inability to manage emotional responses, this can manifest as mood swings, inability to cope with stress, high anxiety, feelings of shame and more. Being emotionally dysregulated can lead to the nervous system entering flight, fright, freeze or Fawn response - the body's response to threats. This can even happen when a threat isn't present. Each individual has their own window of tolerance. The place where you are able to regulate and manage your emotional responses. Dysregulation, takes you out of your window of tolerance leading to your nervous system responding to the perceived threat. Dysregulation involves an extreme sensitivity to emotional triggers and an inability to return to a baseline state of being with in a reasonable timeframe. This can present itself in a number of ways, varying from person to person. These include: 🫥 Feeling easily overwhelmed 😫 Feeling overly emotional 😭 Crying easily/crying for 'no reason' ❗️ ️Greater impulsivity 😳 High levels of anxiety 😦 High levels of shame 💔 Relationship conflicts As well as other signs and symptoms It is important to be able to recognise the signs of dysregulation in ourselves and others in order to provide or seek out the support that is needed. #mulberrybush #75years #emotionalwellbeing #wellbeing #dysregulation #signsofdysregulation #childhoodtrauma #neuroscience

October is Black History Month 🫶 In celebration of Black History Month, we have put up posters in the school library around the theme of the month. This year the theme is around reclaiming narratives - marking a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. The posters highlight: Influential Black authors, poets, and playwrights who have shaped and reclaimed their stories in the literary world. Black scientists, engineers, and inventors whose ground-breaking work has reclaimed their place in the history of innovation. Prominent Black activists and leaders who have championed social justice and civil rights. #mulberrybush #BlackHistoryMonth #blackhistory #ReclaimingNarratives #BHM2024

Achieving rigour and reliability of the SEA Scale is ongoing as Lucy Roberts researcher starts data collection for her PhD. The SEA Scale, The Mulberry Bush Bush Projects innovation is a measure of children's social and emotional functioning. In 2013 we were very lucky to start the collaboration with Robin Banerjee and Nikki Luke, their insight led to our 25 item/2 subscale questionnaire. Lucy's research is adding to the validation and understanding of how the scale works. For more information and to try it for free contact Matt Wareham at the Mulberry Bush.
