Tomorrow, we're in conversation with artist and integrative arts counsellor, Michelle Rodrigues, exploring connections to ancestral heritage as part of our Methodologies series. How can artistic practice help us make sense of what we discover, or fail to discover, in the archive?   Register for 'Following the thread: creative responses to the archive': https://lnkd.in/eQFpzkZS?

What do creative responses to archives and research methodology look like? A volunteer archivist knits her own 'intersectional jumper' using a knitting pattern designed by feminist magazine Spare Rib in 1982, and donated to Glasgow's Women’s Library. Ten walks through Britain's idyllic countryside bring hikers into conversation with forgotten links to transatlantic slavery and colonialism, as well as revealing the historic impact of these forces on the landscape and rural labourers. The Royal Shakespeare Company has became the first performing arts organisation to be awarded Independent Research Organisation status, exploring how immersive technologies might enhance creativity in performance 🎭 Are we such stuff as dreams are made on? To learn more, tune in to our series of online talks - Methodologies: Creative Responses and Research Methods in Archives 💡 These virtual events bring together researchers, practitioners and creatives, who produce new knowledge through the interrogation/disruption of archives! Introducing an unusual Victorian medical device held in our collection, the Electropathic Belt - on show throughout September as part of our one document display, Stories Unboxed. Made by the Medical Battery Company in 1893, the Electropathic Belt was advertised as being able to cure nervous complaints, indigestion, sleeplessness and impart "new life and vigour". Did it work? This belt was used as evidence during a court case heard at the Queen’s Bench, and was examined by eminent scientist, Lord Kelvin. His witness testimonial survives in our collection, alongside the physical belt itself. Find out what Lord Kelvin had to say about this remarkable (and misleading) medical device in our latest edition of 'Records Revealed': https://lnkd.in/dKB_4rgZ

    • Three objects from our collection: a Victorian cream and white belt, folded together. It has four white straps. Beside the belt, a handwritten note written on very well used paper, used as evidence in a libel case. Out of focus in the background, a pamphlet for a Victorian medical belt that explains how it is to be used.
    • The belt is shown unfolded, revealing sixteen copper and zinc discs on the inner side of the belt.

🎧 Untold Stories of D-Day A new episode of our 'On The Record' podcast is out now! Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 6 June 1944, 24,000 soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy. What followed was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Their mission: to liberate Europe and defeat Germany. In this episode, host Chloe Lee speaks to colleagues about some of the individuals who contributed to this operation, whose stories we may not be familiar with: a tank driver on the front line, one of the first black women in the Royal Air Force, and a femme fatale whose coded telegram saved many lives on this historic day. Call for Participation - get involved! History and Archives in Practice (HAP) 2025 Annual Event   Working with Memory: History, Storytelling and Practices of Remembrance  Where: Senate House, University of London  When: Wednesday 5 March 2025    In 2025, people around the world will reflect on 80 years since the end of World War II, remembering this pivotal moment in global history and commemorating the lives lost during the conflict.    Those of us working with history and collections - archivists, historians, researchers, and practitioners - think with memory on a daily basis. However, memory itself is an elusive and plural concept; it is both material and immaterial, and working with memory is not without its challenges.    With HAP25 we want to consider these challenges, share our learnings, celebrate our successes, and delve into the possibilities that occur at the intersections of history and archives. We seek to examine how we understand and work with memory, considering questions like: How are memory, storytelling and remembrance felt and practiced? How do we decide what memories to collect, and whose stories to tell? And how can we imagine new, expansive and intersectional ways of working with memory within our practices?    HAP25 aims to explore, but is not limited to, some of the following topics:  ➡️ Commemoration and remembrance  ➡️ Storytelling, history and archival practice  ➡️ Ethics and working with memory  ➡️ Home, personal memories and archives  ➡️ Community memory  ➡️ Institutional memory and beyond  ➡️ Beyond materiality You can access the full Call for Participation and information about participant bursaries here: https://lnkd.in/eJjADaWy Submission deadline: 30 September 2024 If you have any questions at all, please email 📧: research@nationalarchives.gov.uk
