This week I attended an event at the House of Parliament where #SchoolFoodReview launched their updated report. The Superpowers of Free School Meals details all of the benefits around the expansion of extending Universal Free School Meals, meaning that all children within primary school would have access to lunch every day. This document is full of detailed evidence around how offering this would not only be a much needed relief to many families but would also help drive the economy and is supported by parents, teachers and the wider public! We live in the 6th largest economy in the world but have 900,000 children living below the poverty line that don’t qualify for a Free School Meal… this is shocking! Children having access to at least one hot meal a day should be non-negotiable. 108 other countries have joined the Global School Meals Coalition, which will see them all feeding their primary school children by 2030. This includes Wales and Scotland who already provide a lunch to all their children each day. England is simply being left behind! Thank you to Anna Taylor and The Food Foundation for hosting the event.
