Today marked the final day of my junior medical elective, an 8-week research project with the University of Glasgow and NHS GG&C as part of the INtegrated TeChnologies for Improved Polyp SurveillancE (INCISE) project! 🎉 This incredible opportunity allowed me to delve deep into the fascinating world of digital pathology, where I explored the involvement of NK cells and T cells in colorectal polyps by looking at co-expression patterns with cytotoxic cell activity marker Granzyme B. 🔬 This experience has not only expanded my knowledge in the field of pathology but also honed my skills in research methodology, data analysis, and scientific communication. I am immensely grateful to my supervisor Tomoko Iwata and colleagues Resul BALCI, Amal Yousef and Rona McNairn for their guidance and support throughout this project. I am also grateful to The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, which has awarded me with their Undergraduate Elective Bursary for completion of this project. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

This past year has been one of the most difficult times of my life...there were so many points in it that I felt hopeless and at the verge of breaking down completely - from the state of my mental health, to the challenges of transitioning into clinical training & the generally bleak state of the world and my own country. Yet through all of that, with the help of my parents, my friends, my teachers, and surprisingly myself, I managed to get through it. Not only that, but I also managed to get accepted into the Intercalated MSc in Medicine programme, *and* received a scholarship from The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland which I wouldn't have been able to start my masters without - This is something I've wanted to do for the past 6 years... And now that the last stage of this 10-months long process is over, I can finally announce that I have sold my soul to academia for the foreseeable future and will be researching Burkitt's Lymphoma with Melinda Halasz at the UCD School Of Medicine . 16-year old Mani is incredibly happy right now 🥹❤️

I had the wonderful opportunity to undertake my elective at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. I was lucky to receive both the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland Medical Elective Small Grant Scheme and Thompson Educational Trust Medical Elective Bursary. I spent most of my time at the Anatomical Pathology Department under the wonderful guidance of Dr. Angela Chou. My elective covered a broad range of pathology, insightful discussions, and the integration of pathology with other hospital departments. My exposure included cytology, specimen examination, diagnostic reporting, MDT meetings, and innovative pathology teaching. Additionally, I had the opportunity to undertake clinical exposure days across various specialties, including anaesthetics, oncology, and renal medicine, providing a unique insights and underscoring the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork. These experiences have enriched my understanding of healthcare delivery and reinforced my commitment to patient-centred care and clinical excellence. These were possible thanks to the generosity of Dr. Dushyant Iyer and Dr. David Chan. Furthermore, an impactful conversation with Prof. Gill about parathyroid hyperplasia inspired my project on hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease, which we aim to publish. Overall, the elective was transformative, enhancing my appreciation for pathology's crucial role in patient care.
