While we push for more evidence-based design, taking a more holistic ‘inclusive’ or ‘universal’ approach to design is surely a win win? We asked our Head of Ergonomics Jim Taylour to share his thoughts on lessons learned from the front line of Inclusive Design. https://lnkd.in/eYu64t_U

Makers Not Just Designers.
About us
The story begins in 1976 when our Chairman Colin Mustoe began designing and manufacturing office furniture. In the early days, he would even build and deliver the products to customers himself. All these years on and although we’ve grown into one of the largest office furniture manufacturers in the world, we remain an independent, family-owned business. All the things that were important to us in the beginning; our attention to detail, integrity, investment in people and passion for design, are still very much running through the veins of our business today. We’re a family-owned, independently run, global design-led business. As one of the world’s largest designers and manufacturers we have one core purpose, to design furniture that improves the lives of our customers. This purpose means we design furniture we believe in. It’s our objective, our benchmark. It ensures every piece of furniture we design, we care for, we question and we refine. We do all of this to ensure every piece stands the test of time.

Designing for Neurodiversity presents challenges in that human traits are complex and continually changing. We asked our Head of Ergonomics Jim Taylour to share his thoughts on lessons learned from the front line of Inclusive Design. https://lnkd.in/eYu64t_U

It seems that everyone is claiming they make a 'quality product' these days, and only time will put that claim to the test. We prefer to talk about product life extension - because not only do we manufacture products that stand the test of time, we also consider how they can be repaired, remanufactured, reused and eventually, recycled. As well as a human-centered design approach, circularity continues to be an important principle for us. We are committed to designing products that are made to last, and that live on responsibly.

St Catherine's Hospice is a charity that provides care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses. The Hospice runs 13 charity shops across Chorley, Preston and South Ribble – including The Mill Gift Shop in St Catherine’s Park, and dedicated furniture and book shops – as well as a range of online shops. Through Wish List, we donate good quality pre-loved items of furniture to the charity, to sell in its shops and to furnish its kitchens and office areas. Since April last year, it has raised an incredible £4,883!

Reusing as much as possible is important to us at The Senator Group. That's why we developed our Wish List Programme. Through Wish List, we donate pre-loved furniture with lots of life left in it to charitable organisations and worthy causes. Donating almost 4000 pieces of furniture last year not only helps the community, it also means that 88,743 kg of furniture has been diverted from landfill, saving over 152,000kg/CO2e

We have planted 25,000 Trees - and we're not finished yet! Yes you read that right. As part of a three phase programme, we have committed to plant a total of 30,000 trees, which will sequester an estimated 8,000 tonnes of carbon in their lifetime. With the help of the Ribble Rivers Trust, local schools, and exceptional volunteers from across our business, we are very close to completing the project, which will not only remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but will also promote good biodiversity in the Ribble Valley.
