We are delighted to announce that The Sherborne has appointed its first CEO, Liz Gilmore, who currently leads Hastings Contemporary in East Sussex. As one of the most respected figures in the UK art world, Liz will take up the post in March next year. She has led Hastings Contemporary (previously Jerwood Gallery) for 14 years and has established the gallery’s reputation nationally as a leading innovator of artistic interpretation and engagement. Liz previously held roles at Arts Council England and The National Gallery. “I am thrilled to be taking on this new role and all the opportunity it brings to create a new and inspirational artistic programme, blending The Sherborne’s ambitions for excellence, participation, creativity, learning and enjoyment." she says. I have been inspired already by the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of the whole team, from volunteers and staff through to the Board and the enduring support of Michael and Sally Cannon who created such a wonderful vision for the Sherborne. Together they have created truly magnificent pathways to new types of programming and engagement in this vibrant landmark setting and I greatly look forward to working with the team and many partners to realise The Sherborne’s potential as a leading and unique artistic destination.” The Sherborne’s mission is to inspire regional, national, and international audiences with a diverse artistic and cultural programme encompassing visual and performance art, cross-arts, community and education projects. Sir Robert Fry, Chair of the Sherborne House Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted that Liz will be joining us. After an outstandingly successful period at Hastings Contemporary, she will bring invaluable experience as well as the flair and energy she is known for in the arts world. Liz’s appointment reflects the level of ambition we have for The Sherborne and its role as a centre of artistic excellence and a vibrant creative and community hub.” Full story here: https://lnkd.in/e6PtRuWS #dorset #thesherborne #visitdorset #destinationforthearts @visitdorsetofficial @davidzwirner @union.gallery #rosewylie @jakechapwoman @museumandheritageawards @paularegostudio @skyarts @thegreatwomenartists @keithtyson23 @lizdoch @hauserwirthsomerset #turnbacknow @barbarawalkerstudio @nengiomuku @pippyhouldsworthgallery @acegram @lakwena @henrykrokatsis @quentinblakehq #weliveinworryingtimes @yunhyongkeun_official @projectartworks @lizgilmore_art @coastalculturetrail #chaimsoutine #leonkossoff

Historic England has today revealed its Heritage at Risk Register 2024. 124 sites have been saved and The Sherborne is one of these. The Register provides an annual snapshot of the health of England’s valued historic buildings and places, helping to ensure their protection and continued enjoyment. Historic England works closely with partners and communities across the country to breathe new life into the places that need it most. This year alone, 30 sites have been rescued and their futures secured in the South West. Heritage Minister Sir Chris Bryant said: “The Heritage at Risk Register plays a vital role in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our rich heritage across the country. Many beloved sites have been removed from the list this year and I hope that more will be saved thanks to their inclusion this year." Between 1932 and 1992 Sherborne House was used as a school and remained in low-key use after the school closed, but its condition deteriorated. The Sherborne House Trust acquired the building in 2018 and plans for its transformation into an arts venue were approved in 2021. Its revival is a testament to the extraordinary generosity and drive of Michael Cannon. His vision for Sherborne House was realised in the spring of 2024 and continues to be built upon, marking a significant chapter in the history of this heritage landmark. Led by local architecture practice SPASE, discreet structural repairs were completed first, followed by a carefully researched and implemented restoration of the interiors. Finally, specialist conservation of Thornhill’s murals has allowed full and permanent public access to these important paintings for the first time. Stefan Pitman, Founder, SPASE, said: ‘This building is of such historical significance and has been a landmark in Sherborne for centuries – it even played host to Charles Dickens, whilst William Macready took tenancy of the building. Preserving its historical integrity whilst ushering it into a new era for the town is a huge honour and we are delighted to now see it rightfully removed from the Heritage at Risk register”. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Will Scott-Masson, Restaurant Manager at Macready's, to dive into the much-anticipated launch of their new bistro, and get an inside look at what makes this project so special. William shared how the redesigned space is elevating the experience for The Sherborne's visitors. Our sister agency, Field, played a key role in bringing this vision to life, overseeing both the design and intricate details. William expressed his satisfaction with the results, highlighting our collaboration. Together with architects SPASE Design and principal contractors Stonewood Builders Ltd, we brought Michael Cannon's concept for Macready's to life. The outcome is truly remarkable, and we’re thrilled to have contributed to revitalizing The Sherborne for the local community to enjoy.
