About us

Over 88,000 people survive a stroke every year in the UK, but surviving a stroke is just the start of a long and gruelling recovery journey. Mums, dads, grandparents, young people, even children – anyone can have a stroke, and its impact is traumatic. Brain damage, caused by a stroke, can leave survivors unable to move, see, speak or even swallow.    The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing life-long support for all stroke survivors and their families. We provide tailored support to tens of thousands of stroke survivors each year, fund vital scientific research, and campaign to secure the best care for everyone affected by stroke. Anyone affected by stroke can visit stroke.org.uk or call our dedicated Stroke Support Helpline on 0303 3033 100 for information, guidance or a chat when times are tough. www.stroke.org.uk Stroke Association - Finding strength through support Registered charity no. 211015 After a stroke, being strong is not a choice. 💜 This #WorldStrokeDay, Buzz Bingo is proud to support stroke survivors through community and connection. A recent Stroke Association survey found that 94% of stroke survivors found speaking with others in similar situations significantly helped their recovery - but only 27% get the chance to do so. To mark World Stroke Day and our partnership to tackle social isolation after stroke, we sent our CEO, Dominic Mansour, and Head of Brand Communications Mark Fletcher, to visit the Parklands Stroke Group in Derbyshire.    The group spoke about their visit to our Buzz Bingo Derby club earlier this year and emphasised how vital welcoming spaces are for their meetings, allowing members to connect and socialise in a comfortable, supportive environment. Dom and Mark shared their stroke stories, while Julia Simpson, Lizzie Bekhradnia, Velma Hamilton and Christopher Rennison from the Stroke Association discussed the essential role of the 400 community stroke groups across the UK. Despite serious conversations, the afternoon was filled with laughter and fun (and plenty of biscuits!). Dom took the mic for the weekly prize raffle, and Mark presented group leader Anne with a stash of our purple dabbers, created exclusively for the Stroke Association and Buzz Bingo partnership. Today, every Buzz Bingo club across the UK is hosting a charity Live Bingo game to raise awareness of stroke with all proceeds going to the Stoke Association. #worldstrokeday #strengththroughsupport #remarkablepeople

Dionne and Sue had never met before. But when we brought them together for World Stroke Day they bonded instantly over their shared 'trauma' of surviving a stroke. Dionne 3 months ago. Sue 2 years ago. This video is part of a series of six stroke survivors finding their strength through support by talking through their experiences. This week the Department of Health and Social Care launched what it's calling "the biggest national conversation about the future of the NHS" at an East London health centre on Mon attended by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP and other health ministers. Gary Jopling, Service Delivery Lead, attended the event as a lived experience representative and joined a roundtable discussion with Baroness Gillian Merron and others. On behalf of the charity and the 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, Gary was able to highlight a number of key stroke priorities including inequalities in access to thrombectomy.  Have your say and help improve stroke care in the NHS over the next 10 years by adding your suggestions to the Government's online portal: https://lnkd.in/dmqrAHsZ

Black History Month provides an opportunity to learn and educate others about the diverse experiences of Black people in the UK. It's a chance to dispel myths, challenge stereotypes, and foster understanding. Yesterday we welcomed Charles Kwaku-Odoi DL MFPH, CEO of the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN)), to run a session for our staff, chaired by our Health Inequalities Lead Zainab Odufuye-Saka. CAHN are a change-making community organisation working to address the long-standing health inequalities experienced by people of Black Caribbean and African heritage. Charles spoke to our staff about his organisation's vision and objectives and joined us for a Q&A. Questions raised by our staff included: 'As a support coordinator, what cultural sensitivities around stroke should I be aware of when engaging or supporting a stroke survivor of Black African or Caribbean heritage?' 'What would you consider best practice for involving people of Black African or Caribbean heritage in research?' A big thank you to Charles and CAHN for taking the time to speak with us. We look forward to working with them to ensure that we are removing barriers for stroke survivors giving them strength through support.

A huge congratulations to stroke survivor and volunteer, Al who has won The John Voaden Volunteer of the Year Award, as part of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust’s 2024 Team QEH Awards! Al is a marvellous gentleman who volunteers for the Stroke Association on West Raynham ward (Stroke Unit) and at the charity’s community groups. After recovering from the stroke he had in 2013, he decided he wanted to give something back. A keen artist himself, Al has been running the art therapy workshops in his local community, these workshops support stroke survivors to meet new people and build their confidence. He is pictured here on the stroke ward and with two of our stroke support coordinators, Ness and Laura at a fundraising exhibition that took place in Thornam, Norfolk, last weekend. Al has become a regular volunteer on the ward. Linking in with the therapy team on the ward for suitable patients, he goes to talk to the stroke survivors and their families, offering support, kindness, and a listening ear. We are so thankful to #volunteers like Al, who enable us to help stroke survivors find strength through support. 💜

Congratulations to stroke survivor Clodagh Dunlop for receiving an MBE at Windsor Castle last week for her work campaigning to reform stroke services in Northern Ireland. Clodagh had a brain stem stroke in 2015 which left her with locked-in syndrome. Since then, Clodagh has worked tirelessly to campaign with our charity to use her experience to call for better care, support and services for stroke survivors in Northern Ireland – and she played a crucial part in our #SavingBrains campaign, calling for improved access to thrombectomy services across the UK. Thank you, Clodagh for being a voice for fellow stroke survivors in Northern Ireland and beyond!
