Yesterday, the Southbank Centre hosted a Creative Health Symposium, bringing together artists, community and cultural organisations, policymakers, health commissioners, researchers, clinicians, and young people to explore how arts and creativity can address the rising mental health challenges young people face 🎨🧠 Here are our key takeaways: 👉 The need to shift the focus to the next generation is stronger than ever. Our young people are facing a mental health crisis – NHS statistics show that one in five children and young people in England had a mental health problem in 2023. 💰 There’s a wealth of evidence on the positive impact of creative activities like music, performing arts and spoken word on mental wellbeing, but the sector needs significant investment to apply and crucially scale these methodologies to support young people. 💬 Hearing from those with lived experience is essential to shaping the conversation. As a young person put it yesterday: “You can get things from creativity that you can’t get from a prescription”. 💛 Building on our track record of championing creative health through initiatives such as Art by Post and Mix & Move, we are determined to continue working across the alliances forged yesterday and to be a convening space for inspiring cross-sector partnership working, all to support young people's wellbeing and address health inequalities experienced in our communities. Thank you to all our speakers, partners, and participants for making the day so impactful. We want to hear from you!
