The UK’s largest arts centre & the heart of London’s cultural life

About us

The Southbank Centre is the UK’s largest arts centre and the heart of London’s cultural life. We exist to present great cultural experiences that bring people together and we achieve this by providing the space for artists to create and present their best work and by creating a place where as many people as possible can come together to experience bold, unusual and eye-opening work. We want to take people out of the everyday, every day. Occupying a prominent riverside location that sits in the midst of London’s most vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames, our site has an extraordinary creative and architectural history stretching back to the 1951 Festival of Britain. The Southbank Centre is made up of the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery as well as being home to the National Poetry Library and the Arts Council Collection. It is also home to six Resident Orchestras (Aurora Orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Philharmonia Orchestra).

The Hayward Gallery Touring’s exhibition Material Worlds: Contemporary Artists and Textiles opened last week in Coventry 👏 This ambitious group exhibition explores how artists are using textiles in surprising and radical ways, transforming them into theatrical, bold, unsettling and humorous artworks. In a 4-star review, The Guardian says “This appealing and dynamic show favours substantial works and gives them plenty of space… Material Worlds invites us to see it as an extension of the body, and to ponder what lies beneath.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beginning its tour at the Mead Gallery at Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry (9 Oct – 15 Dec 2024) the exhibition will then go to Nottingham (May 2025 – Aug 2025), Cheltenham (Sep 2025 – Jan 2026) and London (Jan 2026 – May 2026). 👉 Find out more about the exhibition and tour dates here : https://lnkd.in/eUHfDXqK 📷 Installation view, Material Worlds: Contemporary Artists and Textiles, Mead Gallery. Yesterday evening we hosted the Opening Night Gala of the 68th edition of the British Film Institute (BFI) London Film Festival 🎥✨ Since 2021, our Grade I-listed Royal Festival Hall has been hosting red-carpet gala premieres as part of the BFI London Film Festival, including both the Opening and Closing Night galas. This year’s Opening Film was BLITZ, directed by Steve McQueen, and received its World Premiere in our iconic venue. As a multi-arts centre, we're delighted to partner with the BFI to host their BFI London Film Festival as this is not only a key cultural event in London but also one of the world’s best film festivals. We look forward to seeing many film lovers in our buildings over the next couple of weeks 👋 📷 Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for BFI

The Hayward Gallery’s newest exhibition, Haegue Yang: Leap Year opens today 🙌 Yang’s artwork often transforms everyday domestic items and industrial objects into distinctive sculptures and multimedia installations that engage the senses. The exhibition features key works from some of her most notable series including her Venetian blind installations. A 4* review in the Telegraph says: ‘Yang makes surreal, exuberant sculptures and installations that, in their sheer dottiness, are uplifting, festive, and, in her case, often sparkly.’ Find out more about Haegue Yang: Leap Year (9 Oct – 5 Jan) here: https://lnkd.in/dnsf2bmr 📷 Installation view of Haegue Yang: Leap Year, 2024. Yesterday, the Southbank Centre hosted a Creative Health Symposium, bringing together artists, community and cultural organisations, policymakers, health commissioners, researchers, clinicians, and young people to explore how arts and creativity can address the rising mental health challenges young people face 🎨🧠 Here are our key takeaways: 👉 The need to shift the focus to the next generation is stronger than ever. Our young people are facing a mental health crisis – NHS statistics show that one in five children and young people in England had a mental health problem in 2023. 💰 There’s a wealth of evidence on the positive impact of creative activities like music, performing arts and spoken word on mental wellbeing, but the sector needs significant investment to apply and crucially scale these methodologies to support young people. 💬 Hearing from those with lived experience is essential to shaping the conversation. As a young person put it yesterday: “You can get things from creativity that you can’t get from a prescription”. 💛 Building on our track record of championing creative health through initiatives such as Art by Post and Mix & Move, we are determined to continue working across the alliances forged yesterday and to be a convening space for inspiring cross-sector partnership working, all to support young people's wellbeing and address health inequalities experienced in our communities. Thank you to all our speakers, partners, and participants for making the day so impactful. We want to hear from you! If you were at the event, what were your key takeaways? 📷 Pete Woodhead Elaine Bedell OBE, Mark Ball, Misan Harriman, Ndidi Okezie, Sarah Brown, Dr Guddi Singh, Professor Sally Marlow, Beatrice Pembroke, Professor Carmine Pariante, David Bradley, Andrew Bland, Tony Cealy, Kirsty Collander-Brown, Sasha Leacock, Flora Faith-Kelly, Nikki Crane FRSA, Dr Tony Woods, Sophie Leighton, Kieron Morris, Faruq Adigun, Nikki Mattocks, Shelby Bootle #CreativeHealth #YouthMentalHealth #SouthbankCentre #ArtsAndHealth #CommunityEngagement #YoungVoices #SouthLondon

This month, as part of the #CultureMakes campaign we celebrate the educational benefit of arts and culture 🎨 At the Southbank Centre, our extensive Schools programme gives young people from local schools in Lambeth and Southwark, as well as across London and the UK, the opportunity to explore their creativity through in-person activities and online resources. One of the highlights of the programme is our Hayward Gallery Schools Takeovers, during which a class of students works closely with our artist educators to plan a Takeover Day for their peers in the Hayward Gallery. 👉 Find out more about our Schools programme here:  https://lnkd.in/d9ZU6z5X 👉 Find out more about #CultureMakes here: https://lnkd.in/eYfKYBYt 📷 Belinda Lawley

It was brilliant to hear our Chair Misan Harriman speak about the importance of increasing access to the arts in a Creative UK panel with National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company at The Labour Party Conference yesterday. Breaking down the barriers to opportunity is one of the 5 key missions of the new Labour government. It is also one of our priorities at the Southbank Centre as we believe everyone should be able to engage with exciting cultural experiences and access high-quality jobs in the cultural and creative industries. In 2023/24: ✨ 15,000 children and their families attended our Imagine Children Festival, of which 40% was completely free. 🎒 We met and engaged with 11,063 children and young people as well as 1,134 teachers through our Schools Programme. 🎤 We launched our Technical Academy, an innovative scheme aimed at addressing a sector-wide skills shortage and diversifying the pipeline into the technical industries – Applications for 2025 are still open! 📷 Reframe: The Residency, our ground-breaking partnership with Apple, supported 77 young Black and Black mixed heritage creatives in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
