We're currently looking for our next Artistic Director. This is a rare invitation, combining new writing and national touring alongside a commitment to working equitably with young people and activism, and upholding the principles of inclusion and social justice. It is a tremendous opportunity for the right person who will bring specialist skills in making work with and for young people, working to support their creativity; nurturing talented writers and artists; and building connections and relationships with teachers and schools locally and across the country. As the artistic lead, the Artistic Director shapes the creative vision and direction of the organisation, ensuring it remains a driving force for young audiences across the UK. Working alongside the Executive Director/CEO as organisational lead, the Artistic Director will engage in all aspects of the organisation, from marketing and fundraising to finance and operations, demonstrating a hands-on approach in a close-knit team. We’re more than a theatre company.
About us
Creating a better world through theatre. Founded in 1953 by Brian Way and Margaret Faulks, we've been a vital catalyst for youth leadership and creativity for 70 years. In this time, we’ve commissioned 108 writers and produced 237 plays. We have played to audiences of over 1 million in schools and theatres and we have worked with over 250,000 young people through a vast range of projects. Some of those young people are now working in the arts, running companies of their own, or in education teaching drama to the next generations. We commission new writing from trailblazing writers, touring directly into schools and theatres UK-wide, as well as running our year-round Future Makers activities to bring young people, artists, and teachers together as creative collaborators. Future Makers makes space for young people to have agency as they nurture their talent and interests on their own terms. We see access, equality, and representation as foundations of a fair society and work to dismantle exclusion and systemic injustice. We prioritise areas that are systemically underserved and excluded, removing economic and social barriers, and working where young people can benefit most. We celebrate the true creative diversity only the widest access can bring. “For many students this will be their only opportunity to experience live theatre. It is critically important that they do. Thanks to everyone involved another excellent visit from Theatre Centre.” — Teacher

Embracing Radical Kindness in Creative Leadership: My Journey and Insights In a world often driven by competition, the concept of kindness in leadership can seem radical. However, research, including insights from Forbes’ recent article shows that kindness is essential for effective leadership. Embracing radical kindness can transform teams, foster creativity, and drive sustainable success. Similarly, the UK-based organisation People United (https://lnkd.in/egG7twjv) explores how kindness can fuel creativity and social change, leading to stronger, more cohesive teams and innovative solutions. Last weekend, I spent time with 15 talented members of the National Youth Theatre developing Theatre Centre ‘s new show Dizzy by the brilliant Mohamed-Zain Dada. This incubator provided a perfect platform to put radical kindness into practice by creating an environment where everyone felt valued, heard, and empowered. In all the work we do at Theatre Centre, we apply clear principles of working: 1. Openness: During the incubator, we welcomed every idea, allowing young artists to explore their creativity without fear of judgment. This led to richer, more diverse creative outputs. 2. Radical Kindness: We emphasised empathy and understanding in all interactions. This foundation of trust enabled participants to push their boundaries and collaborate more freely. 3. Presentness: Being fully present during sessions meant actively listening and engaging with each participant, ensuring meaningful feedback and support. 4. Boldness: We encouraged bold thinking and celebrated courageous ideas, fostering an environment where taking risks was accepted and encouraged. The weekend reaffirmed my belief in the power of radical kindness. Here are my key takeaways: *Enhanced Collaboration*: When kindness is at the core, collaboration thrives. Participants are more willing to share ideas and build on each other’s work. *Increased Confidence*: Kindness boosts confidence. By validating contributions and encouraging unique perspectives, participants became more self-assured. *Sustainable Creativity*: A kind and supportive environment promotes sustained creativity. Participants were genuinely engaged and passionate about their work. Embracing radical kindness in creative leadership is not just a 'noble ideal' but a practical strategy for nurturing talent and fostering innovation. My experience with the National Youth Theatre has strengthened my commitment to this approach. By leading with kindness, we can unlock the full potential of our teams and create more inclusive and dynamic creative spaces. #CreativeLeadership #RadicalKindness #NationalYouthTheatre #TeamBuilding #InnovativeThinking #EmpathyInLeadership #PeopleUnited https://lnkd.in/epxQbT6u
