“Everything was swaying – then I realised it was the building,” says Elena Cresci, a former Guardian reporter who was on the 28th floor of her building near Chatuchak Park in Bangkok, Thailand, when she felt the earthquake. A powerful 7.7 magnitude quake has rocked Myanmar and Thailand, bringing down buildings and prompting Myanmar’s isolated military junta to make a rare request for international aid. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck central Myanmar at 1.20pm local time at a depth of 6.2 miles (10km). Its epicentre was about 11 miles from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city. The scale of the damage in Myanmar is not yet clear, though social media footage emerging from central regions has shown multiple buildings collapsed or damaged. Myanmar has been gripped by conflict since the military seized power in 2021 in a coup that was widely opposed by the public. The military has since launched brutal crackdowns on any form of opposition, and it is dangerous for journalists to operate in the country. The footage in this video was taken in Thailand.
