Thank you so much, Elizabeth Segran, Ph.D., for speaking with us about the first edition launch of The GAIA Bag, and what it took to bring this to market. We appreciate your support in storytelling the value created through our partnerships with incredible material innovators like NFW.

Leather is bad for the planet. Most cattle ranching is very carbon intensive, and destroys entire eco-systems, like large swaths of the Amazon. (Some readers point out that regenerative ranches are climate positive, which is true, but they still make up a very small percentage of the fashion industry's supply. ) On the other hand, many brands have started marketing "pleather" as eco-friendly. It's not. It is usually made with fossil fuels and it will not biodegrade, but rather break into tiny fragments of microplastics. There's been an effort to come up with high-tech, sustainable alternatives. But a lot of this research and development is expensive. Bolt Threads, for instance, developed a mushroom based material called Mylo, but paused operations due to lack of demand. That's why I was interested in PANGAIA's efforts to invest in Mirum, a rubber based material from NFW. Here's what stood out: 🌍 Pangaia, along with Reformation, Allbirds, and Stella McCartney have already placed orders to purchase Mirum in the months and years to come. This allows NFW to make plans, knowing they have revenue coming it. 🌎 Mirum is still being improved. In this latest tote bag, Pangaia worked with Mirum to create a material with a backing made of regenerative cotton, which makes it more structured so it more closely resembles real leather. 🌏 Pangaia's tote is $500 which is out of reach for many people. But it sees itself as a showcase for these new generation materials. It allows consumers and other brands to explore them and invest in them. When there's an economy of scale, the prices will come down and they'll be more widespread.

    Responsible Innovation at PANGAIA

Better than ever. 💫 In 2022 PANGAIA teamed up with NFW, committing to an offtake agreement for a future, better than ever, version of their material MIRUM®. This past year, working closely with the amazing team at Veshin Factory, I've designed into this new version. Intended to be radically minimal, The GAIA Bag has a mono-material construction that ensures durability and lightweight comfort while underscoring PANGAIA’s commitment to creating products that contribute positively to the planet. Launching this week, the first edition of The GAIA Bag brings to market the most traceable and low-carbon version of MIRUM® to date. Featuring Climate Beneficial™ cotton sourced from the California Cotton & Climate Coalition (C4), a Fibershed project. 🌱 🌎 Find out more on PANGAIA.com - https://lnkd.in/gwWZHQP9 Shout out to the PANGAIA dream team Andrew Yip, Dalila Poggi, Maria Sbiti (She/Her), Tilly Bintley-Bagot and our collaborators Brent Baker, Griffin Sevilla Christensen, Xiao Wei, Joey 🌱 Pringle, Rachel Kastner-Lopez 👏 👏 👏 #materialscience #innovation #sustainability #design

At PANGAIA, we're dedicated to driving innovation and sustainability in the industry. We've partnered with The Mills Fabrica to support their Tech Style for Social Good Challenge. This annual competition seeks groundbreaking solutions to the industry's complex challenges. This year, innovators submitted projects in two key areas: 💭 Techstyle Track: The textile and apparel industry faces pressure to reduce its significant social and environmental impacts. Innovations in materials and design are essential to improving sustainability across the supply chain. 🍬 Agrifood Track: The agrifood sector must address environmental degradation, inefficiencies, and the demand for sustainable, nutritious alternatives. Eight finalists had just 6 minutes to pitch their solutions, followed by questions and then a panel discussion, "From Collaboration to Business Success: Fuelling Innovation Across the Ecosystem" which discussed how collaboration among research institutions, brands, incubators, and investors can accelerate sustainable innovation. Congratulations to the winning team of TFSG INC 2024 for their visionary ideas, AiperBaytech - HMS (HandMadeStone) for Techstyle track; PALGAE and MadeSweetly for Agrifood Tech track, which are poised to transform the future.

The climate crisis is a global issue that should concern everyone—and we can’t solve it unless we ALL take part. Yet, many people often feel disconnected or excluded from the conversation. As one of the few public events during #ClimateWeekNYC, The Nature Temple is inviting New Yorkers to explore innovative climate solutions and join the dialogue. I’m excited to contribute to the discussion on "Redefining Fashion" - one of the most resource-intensive and polluting industries - alongside Alden Wicker and Veronica Zhai, moderated by Angela Del Sol Varela. Come join NATURE TEMPLE Thursday 26 September 9am - 10pm. Our panel 2-3pm. Tickets and info: https://lnkd.in/eMYs__4W Nature temple PANGAIA chilli Ancient Future Labs

Climate Week NYC has turned into one of the busiest weeks of the year for all of us Eco-warriors;-) The real question is whether these gatherings will remain just thoughtful exchanges in an echo chamber of well-meaning people, or if they’ll in fact evolve into real, tangible action – the kind of change that will challenge us, or even be uncomfortable? That’s why I’m particularly looking forward to my conversation with Matt Dwyer from Patagonia and Sarah Kent from The Business of Fashion of Fashion on Thursday 26 Sept, at 6pm during ReAssembly by Regeneration.VC and @AmbitionLoop.Earth. We’re all committed to speaking the hard truths about where the fashion industry currently stands, and as representatives of PANGAIA and Patagonia, we’re ready to back our words with action. Join us for an honest talk and concrete ideas for action. You can register here: https://lu.ma/reassembly
