Alleviating the burden of unpaid labour. Empowering women with the time to take charge over their lives.
About us
60% of the world’s population handwash clothes. If there is access, infrequent electricity and water supplies ensure washing machines are not a sustainable option. The Washing Machine Project is a grassroots social enterprise dedicated to alleviating the burden of handwashing clothes and the often unconsidered consequences this unpaid labour has on people’s lives. We have a solution. Using our engineering and product design expertise, we seek to provide a single, standalone, off-the-grid washing solution that is affordable, portable, and accessible to everyone. We take a user-centred approach and constantly look to improve our design for the needs of the communities we provide for. Our experience in International Development has taught us the importance of sustainable solutions. We believe our product will revolutionise the WASH Sector. By providing refugees and indigent citizens with an alternative to handwashing, we are saving communities time, water, and energy as well as mitigating the associated health risks. Importantly, we want to allow people greater agency in their lives. Over the last 2 years, we have had the opportunity to survey the washing habits of vulnerable people in 11 different countries, including India, Lebanon, and the Philippines, and we are currently in the process of fulfilling orders for our 'Divya Two' model to be sent to refugee camps in Iraq and Jordan. Our team is always growing and we have gained a lot of traction. We have the support of organisations such as The United Nations and Oxfam and have featured on platforms like the BBC and in The Guardian. 2023 is shaping up to be a busy year for us and we hope to travel the globe further to relieve communities the burden of this unpaid labour. We hope you support us on this journey. Together, let’s engineer a more sustainable future.

We're thrilled to have been featured in U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation - where our founder Navjot Sawhney talked all things societal impact, and how we're addressing the burdensome task of hand-washing clothes, with our Divya Washing Machine in remote, low-income communities. We're so grateful for our corporate partnership with Whirlpool Corporation (Foundation) which has been vital to scaling our impact worldwide. We've already impacted 30,000 lives, and have a goal to reach 1 million by 2030🌀💙 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKbErb7C

Subjected the Divya hand operated washing machine to Technology Applicability Framework assessment. Targeting the vulnerable women and children, the technology is intended to ease and reduce time spent on washing clothes. Results will be shared to inform technology uptake and scale up! #TAF https://lnkd.in/dxQvZX68

“Friday” may not perfectly rhyme with “dance,” but that didn’t stop RS Scandinavia from coming together! Despite the lack of rhymes, they participated in our global challenge, Active for Change, hosted by GoJoe, which raises funds for The Washing Machine Project 🧺. Was it graceful? We won't comment 👀 Was it enjoyable? The team enjoyed every minute 😅 Did they break a sweat? You bet 🥵 Our Active for Change Challenge is a light-hearted, team-based virtual activity event happening throughout October at RS. It emphasises teamwork, motivating one another to stay active while supporting our social impact partner, The Washing Machine Project. 🕺 💃 Go RS Scandinavia 🙌 #WeAreRS #OneTeam #ActiveForChange #TWMP

The world’s first flat-packable manual washing machine, the Divya, is a game-changer in frugal innovation. The Washing Machine Project is a United Kingdom-based grassroots organization that aims to alleviate the burden of handwashing clothes “by providing remote, low-income, and displaced communities with an accessible, off-grid washing solution.” A partnership with The Whirlpool Foundation, the non-profit arm of the Whirlpool Corporation, helped address the scale challenge. The team increased the production of machines from one a day to one every five minutes. Distribution of the Divya machine is targeted at underserved populations in rural and urban areas in India, Mexico, Brazil, the Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Uganda. The Divya machine is just the tip of the iceberg—future goals include developing drying options for washed clothes too! Photos: The Washing Machine Project

Meet Namuyomba & Namutebi from Twezimbire mu Mazima women’s group that received our Divya manual washing machine as we did distributions with RS in Uganda💙 We ensured every user had all the essential training they need with basic tools to maintain their Divya machine throughout it’s life cycle 🫧🧺 Our machine is allowing them to re-claim more of their time back for their studies and aspirations in life, rather than doing the back-breaking chore that is hand-washing clothes for hours. #humanitarian #sustainability #laundry #innovation #washingmachine
