Why are trade bodies important in any sector, and particularly space? We live in a democratic society, where in theory a self-elected government and their representatives act in the best interests of our personal and professional lives. Recently democracy has proven itself to be open to manipulation by the rich, the populists, the multinational corporations and (often state funded) cybercriminals in the last few years. It can be increasingly hard If you want to make a difference as a small organisation, some of my favourites being Magdrive, Newton Launch Systems Ltd, LENA Space Limited, Exotopic, UK Launch Services Limited, Skyrora Ltd and AstroMagnetic Systems to name a few: Further, frequent changes in policy, regulation and government funding can make it really hard to thrive, grow and nurture the kind of workplaces we would want to spend large portions of our waking hours in. And because we're small, our voices are easily lost in the noise of global social media (well, lets see how many read this post); SMEs also frequently lose out to the lobbying power of big corporate and wealthy & influential individuals. Which is why startups and small players, working away in the engine room of tomorrow's industry, need to combine forces to collectively influence the dynamics of a space industry where we can all thrive. This is where trade bodies, associations and learned societies come in. In particular UKspace, which promotes the interests of the British industry with the UK government, parliament, and national and international stakeholders. Enabling SME's and the collective sector to punch well above our weight in a world increasingly dominated by a few space powers including the US, Russia China and India, plus alliances like the European Union. What I really like about UKspace is that people I've known and respect from almost 30 years in the space sector have managed and helped grow its reputation, including but not limited to Gemma W., Doug Liddle, Ben Stern, Dr Alice Bunn OBE FIMechE FRAeS CEng Bunn, John Hanley and Colin Baldwin. And many of my (other) favourite companies ranging from NAICKER SCIENTIFIC Commercial Space Technologies Ltd. (CST), Orbit Fab to Third Planet Orbital, support and contribute to the collective voice. Its a really important role that this organisation plays and I encourage any 'space cadet' who isn't aware of UKspace to get involved and leverage their individual efforts. New committee roles are being elected soon, critically for SMEs and In-Space Servicing Assembly & Manufacturing (ISAMs).
