In 2018, myself and my colleague Suzanne Zeedyk decided we wanted to help more people, families, communities, and organisations in Scotland to become aware of the biological impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Our aim was to help reduce the pain and suffering of our children who are facing trauma and to help adults who experienced trauma in their childhood make sense of what happened to them and how they can heal within healthy relationships. Suzanne, and the late Tina Hendry, had just completed a national film tour of Resilience, the documentary by James Redford, featuring Dr Nadine Burke Harris, Jack Shonkoff, Robert Anda and Vincent Felitti, MD which had sparked public interest. We decided to hold a large scale conference, at the Armadillo, in Glasgow and aim for 1000 attendees, 2000 people attended. The delegates came from health, education, business, social work, construction, law, justice, early years, recovery groups, and many came from a personal representation. Dr Nadine Burke Harris was our keynote speaker, among several leading Scottish voices, John Carnochan karyn mccluskey James Docherty Harry Burns Mary Glasgow David Cameron and Nicky Murray. People wrote to us in their hundreds to tell us that the experience changed their practice, their relationships, and for some, their lives. We have held an event every year since, either in-person or online. Our speakers have included Gabor Maté Darren McGarvey Fritzi Horstman Iain Smith David Abernethy Natalie Logan Dr Lisa Cherry FRSA Benjamin Perks Stephen Slessor Dr Warren Larkin Rena Romano surTHRIVER® Juliet Harris Anne Marie Ward Elizabeth Perry, and as late as last week, Sir Michael Marmot and Mayor Andy Burnham. In May 2025 we are hosting a 2-day, in person event, in Glasgow - 'The Biology of Belonging'. Our speakers include @Claudia M. Gold, MD Darren Burns Daniel Siegel Darcia Narvaez Dr Gordon Neufeld (Neufeld Institute) Richard Schwartz. Each of these inspiring speakers is well placed to speak on the reasons that belonging matters and on practical steps that can be taken to foster it. The event will provide us with an understanding of the science of human connection, early brain development, internal family systems, upside down management, and inclusion in the workplace. https://lnkd.in/e89EkSWA
