TMC Marine is taking part in the 2024 OSCAR Dragon Boat Race and needs your help! The OSCAR campaign (The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children's Health and Research) is an innovative fundraising partnership uniting the international shipping community to raise funds at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH). Background of the OSCAR campaign The campaign is the inspiration of Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, whose son Oscar received life-saving care at GOSH. Oscar had leukemia twice and endured three transplants before being cured by some pioneering research. Since its inception in 2011, the OSCAR campaign raised over £2 million, helping to refurbish vital facilities at the hospital, and funding pioneering research into childhood cancers and immune diseases at GOSH and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. About the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race This annual event has already raised over £850,000 towards the total raised by the OSCAR Campaign. Personal safety onboard any vessel is a group effort best implemented through transparent safety leadership. Having investigated many personal injury cases and provided expert witness evidence in court it still intrigues me that as an industry we still see the same issues arise time and time again. A safety system is only as good as the people implementing it, the human factor and effect in safety operations needs to be prioritized as a momentary lapse of judgement or lapse in onboard safety leadership after a long hard day, week or month of being at sea can have detrimental effects on both the seafarer and their family.
